Animal Rescue and Control of Virgin Gorda Featured
Animal Rescue and Control of Virgin Gorda (ARC) is an active group of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. In our fifth year, we continue to address the problem of abandoned puppies and adult dogs and to promote education of residents to be more responsible and compassionate pet owners — slowly but surely we are winning !!! The generous support of many has been instrumental in the overall success of this venture. We thank you very much and ask you once again for a donation large or small to keep our program moving on. Due to the great generosity of The Albert Penick Foundation, who donated $1500.00, we were able to purchase an anesthesia unit/oxygen concentrator and a steel operating table so now we should be in the enviable position of having the vet come to us once or twice a month instead of carrying the animals to Tortola by ferry. However, the government has not granted our veterinarian a clinic license on Virgin Gorda, so at this time we continue the arduous task of taking animals to Tortola. Besides wild and unwanted dogs, there are many feral cats on Virgin Gorda. This year, ARC is continuing a program started some 20 years ago by two expatriates. Three Veterinarians and three students from Tufts University Veterinary School come to Virgin Gorda for ten days. During this period, feral cats are trapped, vaccinated against feline leukemia and feline HIV, neutered and released where they were trapped. ARC raises money to purchase plane tickets and arranges for accommodations and meals donated by local residents and businesses.
