The Government's Air Passenger Duty - the tax on flights from the UK - increases on November 1. While the additional cost on short-haul flights will be minimal at £1,
the rise will mean an extra £10 per person for an economy-class flight to the Caribbean and £15 to Australia.
Fly in premium economy or business class and you will pay an extra £20 each to the Caribbean and £30 to Australia.
And it doesn't end there - another much more punitive rise in Air Passenger Duty is due in November 2010. For a flight to the Caribbean, for example, there will be a further £25 hike in the fare if you fly in economy, and £50 more if flying premium economy or business class.
So, if you're weighing up when to make a long-haul trip, bear in mind that a family of four would save £100 to £200 by choosing to go to the Caribbean this winter rather than the next.
You should also watch out for rising baggage charges. Ryanair has raised its fees yet again, from £20 to £30 for checking in one bag online on a return flight, and, while the first checked-in bag still goes free with British Airways and Virgin, they and other full-service airlines are bringing in hefty fees for checking in a second bag.
