Bluddy Bloke.... Where is Mr Stanford now? LIAT is still operating and he is out of business. LIAT has employed many people for numerous years( my husband's former employer) and Antiguans should be happy that they are employed. Every airline collects taxes on tickets, even the bigger airlines like American, Jetblue etc. Please don't put all the blame on LIAT. Take a look at the price of gas; how would LIAT and other airlines be able to serve the people if some taxes are not included.

That you have clearly pointed out the Correct Methodology in which Taxes are applied to the Airfares, because LIAT is "The Airline We Love To Hate" rather than "The Caribbean Airline", the Correctness will never take hold. It has been explained ad nauseum that only Antigua & The BVI do not add the Departure Tax to the Ticket. If the Luddites would only add the Departure Tax, then maybe they would realize why the cost differential exists and from where. This also shows the self loathing and the degree to which anything from outside the region is appreciated. Anyone who spends the time researching the Airline Industry and Small Markets would know that LIAT's Fares are not too exhorbitant. A simple and easy comparison with AA Eagle fares would point the way. Given the restructuring taking place with AA, the potential sale of the Eagle, may be educational. Further interesting development will be realised if the bids from Delta or US Airways to take over AA are successful or not. Anyone who understands the Industry in small markets know that the Cheap Fares From the Irish Buccaneer is a temporary market strategy. Respect.

There is one issue with your comment. the taxes imposed by liat is based on the country of departure, not arrival. Late last year the government of St.Kitts, raised its taxes on airfare, thus resulting in your tax being higher that the cost of your ticket. In fact, the taxes leaving out of Antigua is the lowest amongst the other Caribbean island. So really and truly you can"t blame the government of Antigua on this one.

Just to let you know, fares have almost DOUBLED within the last few years, EXCLUDING tax and fuel surcharge.

In 2008, I paid 104 US for a flight to Dominica, EXCLUDING taxes and fuel surcharge (with them, total price was 176.40)

In 2012, that same flight to Dominica on the same days, with the same time between booking and flight will cost 238 US WITHOUT Taxes and fuel surcharge (with taxes and fuel surcharge the cost is 311.80)

One must also remember that taxes are dependant on the fare - the higher the fare the more taxes will be charged.

The idea that extra taxes are solely, or even mostly responsible for the rise in air travel prices is a myth propogated by LIAT to assist its gross inefficiencies. I have no problem supporting a local company, but LIAT's price gouging MUST STOP

Do not blame LIAT for the prices for tickets. Blame the Antiguan government taxes.

The Antiguan government charges more in taxes to fly here than LIAT does for the airfare.

In all the years LIAT has been there I am yet to hear its crash. We flying liat, we flying liat the caribbean airlines. The service may be aweful, the prices may be high but me feel safe flying on liat.

Until Red jet can place a base in Antigua and provide as many jobs as liat does then i would not be supporting them. LIAT is not the best, but sure isn't the worse either; but as usual we going to see locals never supporting our own.

It is full time that LIAT our local airline gets competition from other airlines. I agree that LIAT has provided quite a bit of jobs however, I will echo the sentiments of Mr. Stanford that " LIAT needs to be run out of business" if it continues to charge such high prices for their tickets. It appears as though the Gov't of several of the Caribbean islands who are the main stake holders in LIAT does not care about POOR PEOPLE uniting with their families. It is so sad to say but it is the truth.
