Ferry Docking Facility Handed Over

Antigua-Montserrat-ferry,-photo-panoramio.comAntigua St John's - The European Union financed ferry docking facility in lower St John’s was formally handed over to the government of Antigua & Barbuda in a formal ceremony on Monday.

Both Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and Montserrat Premier Reuben Meade officiated at the ceremony held as part of celebrations marking Antigua & Barbuda’s 30th anniversary of independence.

National Authorising Officer Ambassador Dr Clarence Henry said the facility was built with $3.5 M from the European Union, with the Antigua & Barbuda government contributing about $200,000.

The facility will enhance travel between Antigua and Montserrat. It became necessary after the devastation caused to Montserrat by the eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano between 1995 and 1997.

Henry noted however that the facility will not become operational until early next year, after the completion of a passenger landing unit, expected to begin at the end of November.

The additional facility will house customs and immigration and allow for baggage screening, as well as other security checks. This will be financed by the Antigua & Barbuda government to the tune of $2 M.

The ambassador said the idea is to raise the money through a local finance institution, and that fees charged to passengers will service the loan.

So frustrated that once again our National Authorising Officer doesnt speak the truth in this press coverage ! It is with deep regret that certain documents are to be passsed over to expose such nonsence within his dpt as has happened on this project There are too many cover ups once again with this inept Ministry dpt.

obvious why we have to spend another 2 million! We have to find the usual "pocket money"! Will be real interesting to see what we end up with for the money.

Joke

This sounds like a joke to me, Government of Antigua and Barbuda to build additional facility to the tune of $2M. Why wasn't that facility built at the same time? seems like there is some financing issue. will there be enough traffic to finance a $2M project? A and B government is already broke. They cant pay salaries.
