No Luck With Carnival

High-powered delegationCarnival Cruise Line has not been convinced to keep Antigua on the Carnival Victory itinerary. The high-powered delegation which went to Miami to meet with officials from Carnival Cruise Line recently returned, and in a joint statement to the media, the Ministry of Tourism and the ABCTA said the decision to replace Antigua with St Maarten still stands.

The delegation was led by Minister of Tourism John Maginley, President of the Antigua and Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association (ABCTA) Nathan Dundas, and Consul General for Antigua Miami Office Ambassador Ian Sweeney.

The meeting was called after the announcement by the cruise corporation that as of January 1, 2010, Carnival Victory would be diverted from St John’s.

The cruise representatives apologised to the delegation for the decision to pull the ship without any prior or proper notice to the government and private stakeholders.

Carnival, however, advised that the reasons for the pull-out of the weekly visit were linked to internal company interests.

The Ministry of Tourism and the ABCTA were also able to discuss the impact of the decision on the stakeholders in Antigua and Barbuda.

According to the press release, issues relating to the development of the industry in Antigua and Barbuda were addressed and a commitment was given to address them. These include transportation costs, taxi operations and security improvements.

“Carnival agreed to consider the presentation made by Minister Maginley and Mr Dundas and agreed to have further discussion between Carnival Cruise Lines and the Antiguan delegation on this issue prior to the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) conference slated for October 26, 2009,” the press release said. “The joint effort of the Ministry of Tourism and the Antigua and Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association will continue so as to ensure that the stakeholders in Antigua and Barbuda continue to benefit from the vital cruise industry.”

The Carnival Victory was the ship that brought the six US tourists now embroiled in a court case and accused of beating police officers after a disagreement over a taxi fare got out of hand.

Shoshonnah Henry, Rachel Henry, Mike Pierre Paul, Dolores Lalanne, Joshua Jackson and Nancy Lalanne are on trial in the St John’s Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that the tourists refused to pay a taxi driver after he took them to Jolly Harbour. Reports are that Joey “Hungry Bird” Medica agreed to take the visitors to their destination for US$50, but later increased the fare to US$100 after he took them back to Heritage Quay.

The cruise line had denied pulling their ship because of the incident.

Do the authorities ever check these sites when the are recruiting help. they should. so many people give good, workable advice on these forums, and we are always still in disarray. For instance, touris m should scout out a person like bandelee and consult with him on tourism matters; with the length of his comments on the matter, the articles, and the suggestions given for failure and success, usually viable. somebody need to take notice. his comments are usually non political, which is what Antigua needs right now..fairness, balance and justice. No i do not know bandelee for those who think i am stroking his ego. his comments seem to be worth noticing...

my friends came to antigua on that same cruise line 2 months ago ... when i asked them about their view of Antigua this is what they said ... Antigua was the most expensive place to shop, the people at the docks were rushing them (taxi drivers and hustlers) and they did not like the view out of their rooms or decks from the boat because all they saw was the multi purpose building and a shanty town next to it so they did not get no nice pics like the other islands ... I think our tourism officials should go on these cruises that come here so they can see and get an idea of how people are treated and what they see when they reach Antigua ... in comparison to the other destinations!!!

So Graveyard John went to Miami to negotiate on behalf of Antiguas Tourism without any carrots. Next time dunce free the tourists then go and negotiate. Going to Miami with two empty hands is a recipe for disaster.

Taki ng a phrase from Vere Bird III- I don't know what he went there for he must have gone for the "free food".

RE: Evedence ..It's me your buddy your pal, it's been awhile! Maybe you can answer a few questions?

#18 Have Mercy » 2009-10-03 13:25

What the hell training are you talking about? Who exactly got this training? Opening of a sanitary landfill? Was that even all UPP? I'm just asking! WOW! Some accomplishment! My little neice just learned to tie her shoes do you wish to giver her a medal as well?

I will never disagree that Holberton was certainly never a bed of roses but the question here is where are all the promised improvements and increase in standards? How about this claim of people not being giving their full prescriptions from MBS?

Can you ever be objective about anything? This is just like your feeble past attempts at trying to defend this government about the IMF and it's very much official now where that's heading!

they should be ashamed

#10 eli » 2009-10-03 11:51

if the six tourists had beaten up six other american toursists here on island and we turned a bling eye to the injustice we would have been wrong. if 6 antiguans beat up cops in the us after trying to rip off a can driver they probably would have been sent home in bags. To me Carnival did what they did because too many people (including the cruise association) acted like the 6 were victims before letting the court system do it's work. The Jamaican and GT people on island don't get such speedy trials. The reality is that people don't want to accept that the eleven people in that cab that day got a $132 cab ride for $100 after bargining with two cab drivers. 5 of them had no problem with the fare and left the island without problems...

Big whoop! IS THIS SUPPOSE TO BE A SURPRISE?

#9 Have Mercy » 2009-10-03 10:42

DID ANYBODY REALLY EXPECT A DIFFERENT OUTCOME? Except Evedence that is? You're still around? You and kemba just got off vacation or the check just cleared? I see your views are still as skewed as ever!

This stance by Carnival was clearly on the agenda of theirs for some time but I'm convinced this whole tourists fiasco has certainly been the main contributing factor in driving the final nail into the coffin. It's obviously a move which doesn't hurt them financially while at the same time appearing to be taken some sort of action against Antigua and Barbuda(even if that's not really the case) but the action does communicate that impression. So the US media have become way less critical of them(so overall they benefit).

Antigua losing out to St Martin

#4 Guy Fawkes » 2009-10-03 03:55

Once again St Martin benefits at Antgua's expense. Their Sailing Week is also going from strength to strength, while Antigua's is in terminal decline. It is being handed to them on a plate. Your tourism minister is asleep at the wheel.

jokers

#2 olga » 2009-10-03 02:40

Did they really expect to change the decision? that just did not happen overnight,it was boiling all along it just reach the boiling point now, this is a result of yet another failure on the part of govt to address issues which can negatively affect our economy, they dont really care who come or go because all they want to do to run antigua is to tax us,you think tourist have to come here, antigua was always too expensive, right now it is way out of control and the upp is still determined to make it even worst.they are a bunch of jokers.

Who is talking now??????

#1 THE KING » 2009-10-03 01:15

I wonder if all of this is the fault of Carnival Cruise Lines? Hope the minister can answer that question but if he was left out of the deligation we could have brokered some positive results. I know for sure that we are learning and this is a classic example of how the UPP have allowed things to spiral out of control and then look to blame others because they are not forthcoming with the solutions for them. Remember that you are now in charge so please stop looking back and do what you have to do. Its time you get up off yor ** and go look replacements instead of crying at a mess that could have been handled differently in the national interest...
