Tourism Police Unit Established

Superintendent Clement SolomonAntigua St. John's - A police unit has been established specifically for the tourism sector.

The unit, which Minister of National Security Dr Errol Cort said is already operational, is headed by Superintendent Clement Solomon. No further details have been provided.

In making the announcement on Friday, the minister said the aim is to ensure that crimes against tourists are wiped out or kept at a minimum.

“The police have formed a tourism police unit with specially trained police officers to deal with this issue. So therefore, our beaches and elsewhere tourists visit will have the full protection of this special tourism police unit that has been formed in the Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda,” Dr Cort told the media.

He said the issue of security for tourists was discussed this week during a meeting with Minister of Tourism John Maginley.

The announcement came days after head of the Cruise Tourism Association, Nathan Dundas, renewed calls for such a unit.

He said he is elated with the news and looks forward to meeting and working with the officers.

“I’m glad the Government has seen the need to establish this unit. I think it’s going to go a very long way in enhancing the tourism product. I look forward, along with other partners within the industry, to working with this unit,” he said.

Dundas said hospitality training will be critical for the officers to effectively carry out their duties.

“One of the fundamentals that would be needed is training of these officers to deal with tourists and tourism-related issues, so I’m sure the hotel sector, the yachting sector, and airline sector will be happy to cooperate in terms of providing training in different areas.

The association leader also urged that the unit members be outfitted in clothing different to what is worn by regular police officers, to be easily identified.

He said too that they should be provided with segways or bicycles to allow them to easily maneuver through the city.

Dundas must be sitting in cabinet to know what Cort and the other Ministers are thinking and discussing. The problem with small minded thinkers is that they can't fathom the thought of visionary ideas. It is clear that Mr Dundas is a visonary who thinks indipendently . Just follow the man over the years and u will see.

it will take a multiaxial diagnostic approach you are correct. I was part of the miaim project. It also included economic developement and the pie was shared by minorities and black folks in over town got some also. I don't know if you remember me haorping about an empowerment/ent erprisr zone. What we did was rebuild parts of the county and included law enforcement and other essential services. These zones would be like Point and Grays Farm where special ensentives would be given to new bsiness and job creation for those living in that area. They even set up road blocks to ensure cars was routed though police check points. In some cases the police simply did observation and not physical searches their presence alone sis the trick. A real task force would have not only law enforcement but even students and teachers and business leaders the church and the community.

i MENTIONED IN MY DEBATE A FEW MONTHS AGO THAT THEY SHOULD SET UP SATELLITE LOCATION AT STRATEGIC PLACES AND IF YOU HEAR THE NEGATIVES ABOUT MY PLAN, ONE BLOGGER SAID WHAT SHOULD THEY DO NEXT HAVE OFFICERS IN OUR HOUSE NEXT. i KNOW EVERY CRIMINAL ISSUE SHOULD BE HANDLED BY SPECIFICALLY TRAINED OFFICERS, WITH QUICK ACCESS AND CENTERED LOCATION OF THOSE LOCATION, IN THIS CASE TOURIST SITES (BEACHES, NEAR HOTEL, ETCETERA).

MY ENTIRE PLAN IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR THE TAKING, i KNOW I CAN DECREASE CRIME SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE UNITED ISLANDS OF ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA.

I hope this unit (and ABPF) is prepare for the challenges. What defines a tourist (does this include a CARICOM national on island for a few days)? And, what if a "tourism police is not available at the time of the incident - BUREAUCRACY? The City of Miami had a crime on tourist epidemic in the early 1990s. The solution - targeted police patrols, proper lighting, beach patrols, and improved road signage. Folks familiar with Miami will remember "Follow the Sun". Result = huge success (BECAUSE OF MULTIPLE GOVERNMENT AGENCIES CONTRIBUTING)

Long overdue indeed

I believe this is a 'good move' on the part of the Ministry of National Security, which actually listens to the calls of Dundas. This is well-overdue, and should done long time ago! We have had a number of crimes or violent incidents against tourists. Some of our neighbors like Jamaica, St. Vincent and St. Lucia have tourism police unit in place to combat issues of crimes against tourists. I really hope our officers received the best training to not only fight crimes against tourists but to also have 'conflict resolution' skills needed in "defusing" incidents with tourists and local residents or businesses. While the safety of the tourists is a big concern, the local residents need to have the same assurance, especially, in the latest strings of 'gun-related' incidents on the island. Afterall, we deserve a 'sense of sefaty.'

Signs of the time

When you see these things happening know that the end is near. When government suddenly appears to be listning to the people, you know the end is near. Note that they did not even consult with Mr. Dundas to put this in place neither the AHTA. They did it just by themselves. No imput from anyone in the sector. Which ofcourse means that the implementation is so wrong. It is done by the Minister. Not by the Police Commisioner. Very high handed. I really want to know when government will be for the people with the people by the people. But I applaud the move none the less. We can only make it better. The right persons need to be chosen. Cause this s about working with people and understanding conflict resolution. And being friendly and understanding the tourism sector. Uderstanding giving service. Value to the tourist. No matter who was right in the last brawl at Heritage Quay. The damage is done. They would tell friends and anyone who want to hear not to come to Antigua. Bad PR.

OK...so a special unit or select few are trained in how to deal with tourists...whic h unit will be trained to deal with us locals?

This is just a rush to do something without thoroughly thinking it through!

By the way are going to have specially trained doctors and nurses to handle tourists at the hospital?

Please...just train all the Police and everything will be great for all of us and the tourists too!

Yet in a related story:
Quote:
But eyewitness reports from taxi drivers in the area suggests that the police officers were the aggressors, having reportedly “roughed up” the lad in front of his parents and as they interjected they too became victims, with even the pregnant mother receiving a thug or two. The family was eventually ordered and escorted back to the ship by a senior officer who arrived on the scene. And during that journey, the child is reported to have wetted himself out of fear. If the latter story is true, it basically confirms that the police in general need to be trained in how to deal with people

Happy New Year to all.

#2 R.Berry » 2013-01-05 07:36

Every single Police should be "specially trained police officers to deal with this issue" (Tourism or any other matter).

What this now means is that a NON-specially trained police re Tourism, sees a potential incident regarding Tourists, he/she gine jus walk away.

Wha loss...more bureaucracy with nothing being done.

Dr Errol Cort said is already operational?

#1 skyewill » 2013-01-05 05:56

Once again double talk, which is it," wiped out or kept at a minimum?" you can't have them both
The announcement came days after head of the Cruise Tourism Association, Nathan Dundas, renewed calls for such a unit. The LIE = “The police have formed a tourism police unit with specially trained police officers to deal with this issue” REALITY = this was suggested days ago. If you say they are being trained, maybe I may believe you. The other article titled, “Police officers and Tourist clash in Heritage Quay store”, prove that training is never a done deal, it is a continuing event. I bet you can’t show us the training manual or where those officers signed off that they have been trained and they understand their duties. I have to give credit to Mr. Dundas for the speed this was announced but it must still be done right. LIP SERVICE will not work! Anyone can pick 20 guys and say “ok you are the new Tourist unit” there must be training in customer care and it will take time to do.
