Dundas Repeats Call for Tourism Police Unit

President of the Cruise Tourism Association, Nathan DundasAntigua, St. John's - President of the Cruise Tourism Association, Nathan Dundas, has made an urgent call for the immediate formation of a police unit specifically to safeguard popular hot-spots frequented by visitors.

"We are a tourism destination and tourism is our primary income earner. As such we believe that the formation of such police task force will enhance our tourism product," he said.

"We believe that a group of police officers who are dedicated to the tourism sector would go a far way in ensuring that our visitors are safe and secure and it would help to prevent crimes from taking place. Any individual who is intent on preying on tourists would be warded off when they see the existence of such a constant presence of officers."

Dundas first issued the call for the establishment of such a unit years ago. While authorities here have not heeded the call, St Maarten and neighbouring St Kitts have introduced similar programmes.

Those two countries have since seen a drastic reduction in harassment of tourists in their shopping areas as well as on the beaches, Dundas explained.

He said the officers that currently patrol Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay perform multiple duties, preventing them from being dedicated to the tourism sector.

The intention, he noted, is for select officers to be outfitted with short pants and t-shirt boldly emblazoned with the word police. Those patrolling the quays will be equipped with bicycles and segways (personal electric self-balancing transportation) while those stationed at popular beaches will have rugged-type vehicles.

The association boss said at least one financial institution has shown interest in supporting the initiative.

"I've been speaking about it to a number of police officers, including senior police officers, who've  expressed interest and desire for such a  task force because they believe it will enhance the efficiency for them to operate in those areas," he said.

"We've also received interest from one banking institution that is willing to fund the clothing for the police. We need the authorities to take a serious and urgent look at this because it will enhance the product," Dundas added.

I admire Mr Dundas. As soon as he suggests a tourism police force look what occurs at Heritage Quay. Pity the powers that be don't listen to him more often.

These proposals have been made already

#9 Observer » 2012-12-31 22:48

It is sad but these proposals have been made long time ago when we had the beach killing of a tourist at Pigeon Point. Put like everything else these politician don't like to take free advice. It has to come from someone with a Dr. degree from outside Antigua and cost lots of money. They never take advice from their own accept when years later they can pretent as if its their own. Like the Construct Antigua Initiative. Even in the USA when you go to polpular beaches in Miami or Fort Lauderdale you have police patroling specifically the beaches on bikes. And they are in direct communication with the other police in case a criminal is escaping. When I was in Vatican City you have special guides that take you around if you want to. Tourist would appreciate it if they know their is security all around. makes them feel comfortable. Sometime I see tourists wandering around and you can see they are lost but don't wishes to approach just anyone. When I see them I think by myself these form such an easy prey for hustlers and robbers. if tourism is our main foreign exchange earner we should do more to protect it. Cause when it is lost its much harder to get it back.

@ Tiny, Skyewill,Troubl ed - Low Hangng Fruit!

#8 John French II » 2012-12-31 16:51

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! Contrary To Dr. Isaac Newton's New Year's Message this causes one "to focus on the obvious unenlightened leadership, crime and insecurity". How many years has the Gentleman President CTA been a major player in this most crucial industry. This Commenter knows of no other SIDS with Cruise Tourism as a major revenue producer where such Police Operations as he is now articulating does not take place. The 2013 Budget speaks Quote:
in terms of the product development strategy, a Revitalised Tourism Product Development Committee, with an enhanced mandate.
Tiny, you have hit the Nail squarely on the Head. Are you being too harsh? IFF the Good Gentleman had been articulating this solution on the Committees and in discussions with the Minister.
Skyewill, keep on bringing forth Strategic Imperatives, with objectives, strategies, measures & targets. No short cuts to Change Management & Quality performance.
Troubled, that we must catch the low hanging fruit is agreed. Success can only be achieved through Strategic Planning. Too Much Transactional Thinking at all levels. Dress Code? Leave that to the CoP.
Respect!

Skywell ... Thats a good long term approach to tackle Crime from its root and that's good.. However what Mr. Dundas is suggesting makes for real PRACTICAL sense at this time. That is the appraoch that MOST tourism based countries take.. You have to protect whats brings in your income .. The appraoch that Mr, Dundas is suggesting is practised already in a number of caribbean destinations .. he mentioned St Kitts and St Maarten, however Grenada has recently form such a force , you go to barbados and in the center of thier biigest attraction in the Gap is the Police station among all the Tourists , and dont even mention the US and many other countries
Tourism is our main business , it has to be protected and I beleive we can get the Police to organize itself properly to be able to administer this sensible apprroach. If the Hon Senator Cort reads this call as well as the Commissioner they should seriously work on this preventative method. Antigua cannot afford to have another Tourism incident and most importantly the world can see that we are making an effort .

Look after the Tourists - forget the rest of us

#6 Dr. Dredd » 2012-12-31 12:22

What a stupid approach. The Police are incapable of protecting we the people who live here. They can neither prevent or solve crime but now Dundas wants these same corrupt dunces to protect tourists.
Do you know anyone more beggy beggy than Antigua Police?
Solve the root of the problem and then you will have solved the problem.

I agree with him, HOWEVER

There should also be a schools unit and city and village patrol. Now someone mentioned the police are already thin and they are right. I have suggested that excess employee in certain ministries be crossed trained to mission support specialists and some go to the police to do administrative work and allow uniformed officers to be out in the field. From the army and police 20 - 30 young intelligent officers equipped to battle the criminals head on while at the same time interact in school drug and crime prevention programs all across the 108 square miles. We need to also enforce curfews on minors and hold parents responsible. The crime plan can’t be one-sided and cater to tourists only.

Stop the Crime

#4 tiny » 2012-12-31 10:47

Isnt Mr Dundas an authority ? why is he asking for the Authority to do something about it ? The Authorities are always asking for the Authorities to do something. Thats why there is always little or no implementation.
I do however agree that lives lost like those innocent Tourists could or may have been prevented if the Police were out there doing their work. I also agree that it would be in the strapped cash Government to ask coprorate Compnaies in A&B to assist to fund this initiative as Tourismdoes affect all of those buisnesses. I hope the Authorties stop talking and do something about it. If St maarten and St Kiits can do it so can we. Hope it gets done as not only the Tourists will be protected so will the local citizens.I am for it.

Smart

#3 Silent observer » 2012-12-31 10:35

I agree with Mr. Dundas. Especially the aspect of preventing Crime before it happens is smart thinking. If Tourism is Antigua main bread winner and 80 % of its GDP then protect it. Otherwise the Crime will just increase > I hope the Authorities take it seriously and not wait for more incidents like COCo Bay and Pigen Point to happen and then try to do damage control after. Please take this seriously and act now.

You guys don't seem to get it! You can put all kinds of "special" forces in place, but unless you change the Top B** - it won't add up to a bag of wind!

Tourists are no better than locals. Therefore, everyone has to be protected equally.

RE: Dundas Repeats Call for Tourism Police Unit

The Police force is already stretch thin keeping up with crime elsewhere on the island and weeding out the bad apples within them. Those persons who drive around in St. John's in the green and white air-condition vehicles giving people tickets for illegal parking why dont they let them Patrol Heritage Quay and other Tourist Spots instead?? I hear they make more money than the police constable so give them some real work to do .
