Tourism Minister Stands By Airport Charge

Tourism Minister Stands By Airport ChargeAntigua St. John's - Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation John Maginley continues to defend the Airport Administration Charge in the face of criticism by stakeholders that its recent introduction could spell trouble for visitor arrivals to the country.

The minister contends that tourists will continue to come here once their expectations of travel are met. And while he admitted that the cost of regional travel is high, he challenged the suggestion that taxes account for 60 per cent of ticket costs.

The charge was implemented on November 1 at a cost of US $37.50 for each passenger arriving and departing though the V C Bird International Airport. The minister told the Big Issues programme on Observer Radio on Sunday that the additional US$23 raised from each ticket will go towards upgrading the airport facility and ensuring it remains up to international standards.

"I understand that airlines have a challenge with that but they also have a challenge with us not being able to supply them with a safe runway..." he said. "We're doing what needs to be done to make sure the V C Bird airport is at international standard."

He insisted that the overall charge of US$75 is still lower than what pertains in other regional islands, adding, "Every penny raised at the airport will be put back to make sure the airport is independent."

The minister used as an example the Air Passenger Duty (APD) implemented by the British Government that, he said, has not caused a reduction in travel by UK nationals, though they are heading to other markets.

Caribbean governments, tourism stakeholders and major international airlines such as Virgin Atlantic have called for a review of the APD.

Last week, Caricom Chairman Dr Kenny Anthony said he was disappointed that the UK continues in "its discriminatory approach" to dealing with the tax.

Airline weekly quote

#7 InteresteD » 2012-12-11 06:59

"Like so much else in the airline business, high- er fuel costs are the chief reason for all this. All flights—long and short alike—consume fuel. But fuel is a much bigger piece of the overall cost pie on longhaul, where conversely other costs, par- ticularly costs on the ground, matter less. No airline will say it doesn’t care about airport costs, but listen carefully and notice that longer-haul carriers talk about them a lot less than shorter- haul ones' ....local Experts this is from Airlines Weekly......so Maginley's comments are supported by the experts in the industry. And airlines will make route changes for commercial reasons so expect changes on frequency from year to year as mergers happen and policy direction changes..... $75 extra on a ticket is high. But that is not the deal. They spent millions on the Airport already some years ago was it not done right the first time?

RE: Tourism Minister Stands By Airport Charge

Mr Minister, what are the rules governing study leave and duty leave. We have two or 3 members of staff who have been taking study leave for say a one month here and a one month there - (erratically) over the last 10 years or so with no degrees to show for their "hard work." Isn't study leave for a continuous/set time? who is approving this leave?

Our ministers need to think before they speak. They need to have one coherent message and stance on issues. After stating on record that the UK APD increase has not caused a cut back in UK travel, he cannot make an appeal to the UK government to repeal APD because it is hurting travel to our region. The moment he brings up APD, the UK will say well here are you words stating that it has not caused a cut back. So disappointed in these fellas.

TAXES ARE THE UPP ONLY SOLUTION

#1 1ken » 2012-11-19 06:29

I hope that when the very same airlines of whom he speaks of, start cutting back their flights for lack of passengers, because of the high cost of the tickets to include all Government taxes, what will you then do Mr MP?
