Airport Administration Charge Takes Effect

Airport Administration Charge Takes Effect Antigua St. John’s - The Antigua & Barbuda Airport Authority, Ministry of Finance and the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority hereby advises travel providers to inform their clients of the new Airport Authority Administration Charge that will be applied to all travel from November 1, 2012.

The Airport Authority Administration Charge is to be collected on all tickets for each arriving passenger at US $37.50 and each departing passenger at US $37.50.

This charge will in effect replace the existing departure tax that is currently issued to all passengers, except those transiting through Antigua & Barbuda and departing Antigua & Barbuda within 24 hours. Additionally, the new Airport Authority Administration Charge will also replace the current Passengers’ Facilities Charge.

Passengers exempted from the Airport Authority Administration Charge include children under the age of two years at the time of travel; positioning air crew; persons taking part in training flights; passengers travelling on the domestic sector between the islands of Antigua and Barbuda; persons travelling on military, scientific or meteorological flights to whom no ticket has been issued; persons using diplomatic passports as their travel documents; and persons transiting through Antigua & Barbuda and who depart from Antigua & Barbuda within 24 hours.

The newly-effective charge will be built into a passenger’s ticket and the funds will then be remitted to the government via the International Air Transportation Association (IATA). All airlines and travel operators are required to collect this tax when billing the customer for the ticket as there will no longer be a facility at the airport to collect departure tax from the passenger.

All bookings made with travel dates on or after November 1, 2012 will be subject to the new Airport Authority Administration Charge.

All persons who have booked and paid for their ticket in full to commence travel on or after November 1, 2012 will NOT be subject to the new Airport Authority Administration Charge.

However, those persons who have booked their ticket to commence travel on or after November 1, 2012 but have not yet paid for the ticket in full will be impacted by the new charge.

Add'l Tax for travellers

#14 Dominican » 2012-10-19 23:22

Well Antigua, I will not be travelling your way unless it is an emergency. That makes the ticket seems so much more expensive although in effect it is a 50XCD increase, return trip. Wonder what the price for a ticket Dominica Antigua return will be now. That makes regional travel more costly. what happen to OECS economic union now? Be careful with those decisions, you might be hampering your stayover tourist sector. All the best though.

Retired Antiguan yes you will have to pay. Article http://www.caribarena.com/antigua/travel/travel-tips/99998-new-travel-tax-casts-wider-net.html lists the 6 exemptions and your group is not included. It further states

Quote:
The tax of US$37.50 each way will be attached to airline tickets for all other passengers, including pensioners and children 11 years and younger who do not pay the embarkation tax. Children under 11 are also exempt from the Passenger Facility Tax.

Airlines collect the tax on both sides of the Atlantic anf the deposit it to each country per OI, But it is still a Tax no matter who collect it. Now I dont mind paying it if my airport is user friendly. These things have to be paid for. We must also rember it should not be a for profit operations is should be for operations and maintenance. I will pay the tax no problem. I also hope the Airport project is a success and no scandals and everything runs nice on that one and I still believe more local tradesmen should be on that project.

From some of the comments I just read I see now whey they say Antigua is not a reading public, the article clearly states "All airlines and travel operators are required to collect this tax when billing the customer for the ticket as there will no longer be a facility at the airport to collect departure tax from the passenger."

OK. When all is said and done, how much more do I have to pay out of my pocket? It doesnt matter where I pay (at the airport or at City View), I just want to know how much more I have to pay. Nothing else matters.

Clarification please

#6 Listening WaDadlian » 2012-09-28 16:35

Needs clarification on what this new "tax" is replacing. If this represents departure tax, it represents an increase for locals/caricom nationals. The other issue is whether it will be $37.50 X 2 (arrival + departure as the article suggets) = $75 extra! Perfect way to discourage potential travellers just in time for peak season. Well done. Let's see how many full loads we shall have peak season. Another, rabbit-out-of-t he hat solution to a chronic problem

What is the rationale for not charging "in transit passengers" and those who leave within 24 hours. These passengers are using the same facility as regular passengers so I think it would be reasonable to ask them to pay as well.

Just wondering

have you read the article?

#3 Steve » 2012-09-28 10:41

@Rastaman & Suzette:

Did you read the article? The charge replaces two taxes and combines. No tax will be collected at the airport.
