Tour Operators Support Taxi Relocation

Patrick RyanAntigua St. John's - The president of the Tour Operators Association has given the thumbs up to the plan by the St John's Development Corporation to relocate taxis from Heritage Quay.

Patrick Ryan said there are many positives to the idea which fits within the overall initiative to give St John's a facelift.

"I understand there are certain things they want to join Heritage and Redcliffe Quay and that's good," he said.

"We need space and this is a short term way of finding space for taxis, jeep tours, and marine facilities that everyone can access. Where they operate from is going to affect us in a positive way."

Ryan admitted he does not have the full details of the plan as he was not part of consultations on the issue.

However, he expressed hope that all relevant stakeholders would be involved given the far-reaching implications of the initiative.

The changes, including the recommendation to relocate taxis, are outlined in a study presented by a consultant earlier this year.

Ryan believes this would allow for more parking and a proper dispatch area and help ease traffic congestion, particularly on days that cruise ships call here.

"Relocation always take some kind of adjustment. If it's better and upgraded facilities I'm really looking forward to seeing it. We need to modernise and people resist change," he said.

Quite rite it's amazing how these people who feel that they should get up on their hind legs and make noise, often do without having a clue what they are talking about. Mr Ryan, why don't you just shut up untill you know what you are talking about? Cirtainly know where Dundus gets it from, empty vessels make most noise, any way, I hope that this agreement works and we can get some trade. (and the taxi drivers are happy)

As for the coment about Ryan having all the trade, well thats how it is Garf Abbot, Ryan, yep they are feathering their nest and who can stop them? People get power and make all they can and to Hell with the rest, it's a Caribean thing, look at Liz Mitchlin?

Black man go get nothing but to sweep the floor and wash down their cars. He can't go back to Barbados and do that cause they would run him.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! If the Good Man had not seen the document/report , how does he know it will have far reaching implications?
Cecil Wade sums them up very well. Politicshas always been a controversial subject. ... It attracts people from all walks of life, from theflotsam and jetsam to the most sophisticated professionals.
These present day 'money laundering' Buccaneers, 'human trafifficking' Privateers & 'wannabee' gangstas are well recorded in the History of Antigua & Barbuda. Quote:
Local Government (falsely so-called) is the curse of the West Indies. In many islands it means only the rule of a local Oligarchy of Whites & Half-breeds - always incapable and frequently corrupt. Joseph Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1896.
In 2012 Quote:
By refusing to supply this information, or to give any account of his administration, Codrington added to The Governor's growing dislike of the richer planters and the way he felt they were running, and in his opinion ruining, the island....Codrington, himself became even more enraged when his rights to Barbuda were challenged - A History Of Antigua 1705-07

Pay Attention! - Far Reaching Implications!

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! As the Vendor at the Market says 'Pay Attention!'. Through Sheer Ignorance or 'By Stealth' the Peopl have ceeded the High Ground in the Falmouth, English Harbour & Picadilly Region.
Tenman, the People never had the High Ground in St. John's. 'The Beach is the Beginning' and that too has been ceeded. Heads you win, Tails I lose!
Glad you have seen what has taken place in St. Lucia is sailing to the Rock.
The Political and Business Elites could not give a fig. They are very well rewarded with their numerous incomes from Boards and Private Partnerships. This speaks volumes of the Prez:Quote:

Jeb there is an easy solution for that issue: Do it the same way its done at the airport where persons desiring a taxi simply approach and operator who sends them to the next taxi man in line. I see us headed for a situation like Saint Lucia where foreign interest control tours. Tax payers moneys were expended for these ports to ensure all benefit. My reading of the above article is that tour operators see these changes as being advantageous to their own interest

Reliable word is that part of the problem is the, sometimes extreme, aggression towards the disembarking tourists by some taxi drivers trying to sell a tour and being very unpleasant if there is a refusal. Apparently a substantial percentage of cruise ship passengers have complained about this and obviously the cruise lines are not happy about the situation. Unfortunately, it is usually the minority who spoil it for the majority but I believe that this issue (along with other upgrades) needs to be solved now before this island loses out totally on cruise tourism. I have witnessed this inhospitable behaviour and therefore have no doubt about the credibility and severity of the problem.

the big plan

#1 tenmam » 2012-09-13 11:51

Yes they will support it because it will allow them to soon huff all the business. I see us soon going to a situation where some foreign owned tour group will control all local tours. We seem set on ensuring that all moneys made in tourism, just like the tourist, go overseas
