Workshop Aims Improve Tourism Stats

Antigua St. John’s – The Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture will be partnering with the Statistics Division to host a Data Users and Data Providers Consultation on June 19.

The main objective of the consultation, which will be held from 9 am to 1 pm at the Antigua & Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute, is to enlighten and educate stakeholders within the tourism industry of the importance of the production of quality tourism statistics for the country.

Director of Policy and Planning within the Ministry of Tourism, Mr. Corthwright Marshall notes the importance of such a session stating that “stakeholders must understand the inputs for the production of quality tourism statistics and should be aware of the data sources. The extent of this responsibility includes disseminating relevant, comprehensive and accurate tourism statistics, providing a better understanding of the process to stakeholders.”

According to a release, the importance of the tourism sector to the local Antiguan economy is widely accepted, and the sector has been identified as one of the main contributors to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“In order to accurately capture the social, economical, and cultural impact of tourism to the country, it is critical to produce quality tourism statistics that meet the needs of a variety of data users such as decision makers, the business community, NGO’s, researchers development partners and the public,” the release said.
