For my latest review, I headed to English Harbour, where the boats do dock and the sea-breeze blows fresh. English Harbour - home to many a restaurant, including Cloggy’s at the Yacht Club, a beautiful place located right on the dock!
The waters and the hills across the bay give this restaurant a great location. The restaurant itself has a very modern and relaxing touch, and the staff are friendly and practiced. Cloggy’s is an interesting restaurant, and it is noteworthy that they offer different menus for both lunch and dinner.
I decided to hop in during lunchtime. Cloggy’s is a haven for salad lovers. Every dish comes with one. I was delighted by this fact, for nothing will do a man better than some fresh greens. After receiving the menu, I decided (for starters) on the bruschetta ($20). For the main course, I settled on the chicken shawarma with mixed salad ($38), along with the steak salad ($42). Finally, for desert, I ordered the banana flambé ($24) and the Naughty Desert, a vanilla ice cream with a chocolate brownie and bananas ($22).
First came the bruschetta. A classical starter, bruschetta is actually pieces of diced tomato, green peppers, basil, olive oil, and some other ingredients, depending on the chef’s particular style. Cloggy’s kept it simple, and the bruschetta tasted fresh and had the particular savoury taste that tomatoes bring.
After this, my main courses arrived. It really is funny that the dish is called chicken shawarma, because there was more salad than chicken in it!Still, the chicken itself was fried to perfection, and had a salty and oily tang to it. It was served inside an open pita bread, with salad inside. This salad was also served on the side, and basically consisted of lettuce with a delicious topping sauce. Its flavour was very similar to Ranch, and the lettuce had a fresh and crisp taste to it.
Next, the steak salad. Already this dish looked like a contradiction between the vegetarians and the carnivores. The salad itself was much more complex (yet traditional) when compared to the shawarma salad, but it kept the same flow - rich, fresh, appetizing. The steak itself was tender, grilled, and had a delicious taste and that smoked flavour from a proper grill.
Upon completion, I had almost asked the waitress to get my bill when she came with the desserts. The flambé at first
seemed a little odd. It looked like a cocoon. But the taste - what a delight! It had a sweet coating around it. I’m not sure exactly how it was made, although I would guess that it was torched. Regardless, it was sweet, it melted in mymouth, and cut like butter. I enjoyed it. As good as the flambé was though, it could not compare with what was about to come.
The Naughty Dessert could well have been the house special. It was some sight, with a brownie on the side, the bananas and vanilla ice cream. I’ll get off Santa’s list for one of those any day. The brownie was certainly homemade. It was warm, sweet, and full of chocolaty goodness.
The bananas were cut to slims, and they were really intended to complement the dish. Vanilla ice cream is really just vanilla ice cream. But there was something to it. As a wise man once said, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The warm brownie, the cold and delicious ice cream, and then the slight firmness and exquisite touch of the banana. I really loved it. And so, I finish my review of Cloggy’s.
