Antigua St John's - Widespread industrial action is looming in the hotel sector if a pay dispute is not settled soon.
Over 400 hotel workers met with their bargaining agent, the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU), on Wednesday, and rejected a compromise suggested by Labour Commissioner Hesketh Williams.
Industrial Officer and MP Chester Hughes said the workers are demanding a $26 increase over a two-year period (2010-11), but the Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association (AHTA) is not prepared to go along with this.
The workers will not accept the labour commission's offer of $17 over the period. “They said it was better for him to have offered zero,” Hughes told Caribarena.com moments after the meeting ended.
The union officer said the workers are restive, but he recognizes the sector's importance to the economy, and there will be "no strike on Christmas". After the holidays, however, the ABWU will formally notify the AHTA of pending industrial action if the matter is not resolved.
