Vendors Halt Protests After Meeting

Vendors picketingAntigua St John's - A meeting between Minister of Finance Harold Lovell and disgruntled vendors who took to the streets in protest against a proposed development in the Long Bay area, seems to have quelled their angst, at least for now.

Thursday and Friday saw the more than 50 vendors, a convergence of sellers from across the island, picketing the offices of both the Ministries of Finance and Tourism, respectively. Their main contention is what will happen to them, and by extension, their livelihoods, should a proposed US$100 M Beaches Resort project be brought to fruition at Long Bay.

Earlier on Friday, four members of the vendors’ contingent emerged from a meeting within the Ministry of Finance, but were mum as to the outcome.

However, it was later understood that some compromise had been brought to the stalemate, as was indicated by the finance minister.

Lovell told Caribarena.com that the fracas was a mere misunderstanding, and expressed satisfaction that the air had been cleared on certain issues. He added that perhaps if a meeting of the concerned parties had been held earlier, chances are that the issue would not have escalated to the point that it did.

“We had this meeting at the right time. Initially, I did say that we would meet with the vendors in about two weeks or so. But this meeting did serve its purpose," the minister said.

He added that he has given the assurance to the vendors and other stakeholders that access to the beach would not be denied, and that no one would be denied the opportunity to make a living to support themselves and their families.

Beaches Resort is an all-inclusive resort chain which bills itself as the ultimate family vacation resort, with locations in Jamaica and Turks and Caicos.

Lovell giving vendors some good kraft cheese!!!

#10 George LB Bird » 2011-07-04 12:27

Lovell just outsmart the vendors with a simple promise!!! How can someone tell you when to protest against them? Sounds like Butch Stewart is gonna be on island and Lovell doesn't want him to see any opposition first hand untill after the deal is signed.

I am NOT against the project!!! But I am definately against SELLING the LAND and moving locals to the left or right of the beach for other outsiders to come and enjoy it and take it over.

If we leave it up to the vendors to defend us (who seem to be getting CHEESE in their mouth from "promises" made to them from Lovell) then 4 acres of the one of the best beach front lands IN THE WORLD will be gone to one man who is not even an indigenous Antiguan. And he is setting himself up to be a "major shot caller" by becoming the second higest employer behind government. I guess he will be knighted "Sir" Butch Stewart soon like Stanford was.

And if those vendors believe that a bankrupt government (who can't finish the national library or carpark) is gonna find money to buy 1 acre of beach front land at Long Bay and build bathrooms etc... they better think again!!!

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. That the Hon Minister of Finance has spoken what he has been told is withou question. Both Blues and Reds support the Project as envisioned by the Colonial Privateer. There will be some form of access to some sector of the Beach not Beaches. The Vendors will have new digs from which to sell their wares to the Guests but not at Beaches. Having travelled in the Caribbean Basin, I have seen this type of Development and Tenman you are right "Pickey Head People" are Bawling throughout the region where these developments take place because they have no access to the Guests. They are not like the situation at "Lord Nelson's Dockyard" where they must pass through the Vendors' Mall. In the jurisdictions I have visited there is total separation. In some situations, I have seen even paid access for Nationals to the Facilities & Beach. By the way, this exists on the Rock. The Hon Min has spoken but has not provided all the details. He has not lied. We are distracted too easily. Focus and Think Strategic. Understand what Beaches Value Proposition means. Best Regards.

i await the proposed drawings

I need to state that I welcome the expansion and particularly the investment and injection of money into the local economy. I am however not willing to compromise on me being able to access long bay to picnic as usual. I am willing to wait to see the schematic of the proposed project but I am very skepitical that the 4 acres can be incorporated in the plan and still leaves the area accessible for picnicing. I do not want a road to the beach but I want to be able to access the way I do now with my church group with space for our baskets and rest area. I wait to see the majic and how they propose that I will be able to that once they take up the 4 acres of land. I also ask myself, why doesn't the investor utilize the over 20 acres that he has now that is not developed?

Seeking to put back the horse infront of the cart

At first, I was skeptical also about why the vendors were not talking following the meeting with Lovell but having heard him (lovell) on a radio program on Saturday I can appreciate the vendors position. At first the public was told that; the project was coming; vendors will have to move etc but no plans was shared. Now I'm that plans/designs/d rawings will be shared with government (which should have happened from the very beginning). I am prepared to see the proposal. If it is not satisfactory, just like how Lovell and company marched and marched out Old Road, we can do the very same at Long Bay. It is as simple as that.

John French II you asked the question of the day. I have heard it suggested that he will build a better place for them but I am trying to figure how that will work. If its his building, I can't see him having them there for free. I also don't see him not imposing some level of restrictions. Seems to me if anyone should own such buildings it would be government or the vendors because I really don't see it in Mr. Stewart's interest to keep the vendors there. Why would Mr. Stewart be willing to house persons who will may compete against his resorts gift shop?

So Let It be Said! So Let It Be Done.

#5 John French II » 2011-07-02 22:08

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Broken by the economy and beaten back by the IMF and so many years now slid away, The Blues build by the Colonial Privateer's Grand Scheme a Resort of massive Family Complex on the Beach. They feigned it vowed for their return, and so this rumour floats across the land. Within this majestic edifice, they stealthly imprison chosen men from afar, picked out one by one and fill the management with foreign mercenaries. The Hon Min has Spoken. The Vendors have Heard. There is no lie. Access we shall have. A La **enson Bay? Vendors will be permitted to earn a living. Where? There were no lies. Whether you like the end result is not at issue. Not about them

#4 Lester Baldwin Bird » 2011-07-02 19:13

This issue is not about vendors!!! How could it be about vendors who don't own the property? It is about the fact that where the vendors are now is where ALL of Antiguans who go to Long Bay "chill". Some would "chill" infront of the "local" bar, or to the east of the roundabout. If that area is gone are we ALL supposed to "chill" to the east of the roundabout? How can it be about the vendors when this Administration clearly stated and PRINTED in their manifesto that they will NOT be SELLING STATE OWN LANDS FOR TOURISM PROJECTS!! They said "when required for tourism projects such lands will be made available LEASEHOLD or as STATE EQUITY in the particular project". That is a direct quote from page 12 of the UPP manifesto 2009 and yet in 2011 the UPP wants to SELL 4 acres of one of the most popular and visited local beach in all of Antigua & Barbuda. But lets not forget this is from the same manifesto that had "$500 school uniform grant every year & dollar barrel every christmas" in BOLD FONTS ON PAGE 2. We all know how those went now. Also on that same page in bold was "UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF" to the tune of "60% of last wage". The laid-off workers are still waiting for that one!!!

MUM AS TO THE OUTCOME????

#3 chynna4 » 2011-07-02 11:26

Excuse Me!!! What do u mean they remained 'Mum' as to the outcome of the meeting? Who was protesting here? who were the people standing up with them? where is the transparency? what were they promised for keeping 'Mum' - LOOK!! Nah truble people right!!! There is NO MUM in this. What ever was discussed and agreed to, you damn well make sure that everyone knows so that they are all kept informed as to what's going on. Don't play Lovell's games. U know, and I believe everyone is beginning to see that every time Lovell opens his mouth.....he lies. Tell everyone what was the outcome so that they can help the vendors decide the way forward. Marches are being planned and a huge picnic to support the Vendors at Long Bay - don't make people look a fool.

were the vendors paid off?

#2 fnpsr » 2011-07-02 09:43

I find it strange that no one wants to talk about the discussions that took place. According to the Hon. Min., “We had this meeting at the right time. Initially, I did say that we would meet with the vendors in about two weeks or so. But this meeting did serve its purpose." Furthermore, he added that " he has given the assurance to the vendors and other stakeholders that access to the beach would not be denied, and that no one would be denied the opportunity to make a living to support themselves and their families." Isn't this what the protestest was all about? So, will someone tell me what was so secretive that no one can talk about what was discussed in the meeting. Were the vendors paid off? Where is the transparency? This just opens the door to more speculations on th epart of the public!

RE: Vendors Halt Protests After Meeting

#1 Truth » 2011-07-02 08:41

If the vendors trust anything that comes out of Lovell's mouth they are fools, that man would sell his mother to get his way and both he and the UPP government are so desperate for money they would do anything and sell anything to get it!
