Yearwood Responds To Lovell and Stewart

Long bayAntigua St John's - Parliamentary Representative for St Phillip’s North constituency Robin Yearwood has fired back at criticism from both Finance Minister Harold Lovell and hotelier Gordon "Butch" Stewart that he has back-peddled on verbal agreements with the Beaches Hotel project at Long Bay.

Yearwood was responding to statements Lovell made in a television interview last week that stopped just short of calling him a liar, and a full-paged press statement issued by Stewart and carried in two local publications.

In the statement, Stewart said Yearwood had agreed to the expansion of the Pineapple Beach under the Beaches franchise, one of the hotel chains associated with the Sandals brand.

Yearwood confirmed that he did have discussions with Stewart about the expansion of the hotel, and that he gave his blessings to the project, a point he has maintained throughout the controversy over the proposed expansion and its likely effect on public access to Long Bay beach.

Yearwood said he even agreed to talk to the vendors about the expansion, and he did. He said Stewart promised that when the architectural designs were ready, they would talk again, but at no time was he told that the expansion would include areas of Long Bay used by the public daily.

Likewise, Yearwood said that in his discussions with Lovell, he indicated there would be a problem if the expansion included public areas of the beach. He added that he never heard from Lovell until after the minister met with the vendors and informed them that they had to move to make way for the multi-million dollar project.

“I want to make it pellucid that at no time did I agree to give up the public beach at Long Bay to any investors," Yearwood said. "I have been in government when others applied for that land and were turned down. The law says access to beach… that is for hotels that have already been built, some give 3-4 feet access where hotels are located… Long Bay is not an access beach.

There are no hotels, people of Antigua & Barbuda have total use of that beach, and that’s what I am fighting to maintain. We do not need any access, we want to continue present enjoyment of this beach."

The veteran politician also recalled that while he was in government, there was an issue when a hotelier erected a fence at Long Bay, and the opposition and other forces came together to take it down. “When we had problems at Long Bay before, then opposition leader Baldwin Spencer, former UPP chairman Vincent "Tubby" Derrick, and activist Phillip Abbott went there with their supporters and pushed down what fence was there. Mr Abbott planted a national flag on the beach and Mr Spencer said this beach is for the people of Antigua & Barbuda, no one can take it away from them,” Yearwood recalled.

The St Phillip’s North representative is also pointing a finger at the government for its action that led to ongoing protests by the vendors at Long Bay. He also urged the government to meet with the stakeholders likely to be affected by the development.

However, he remained resolute that the expansion can take place without affecting public access to the beach, and threw out a challenge to Lovell to debate the issue publicly.

I would like to draw persons attentions to this article on Caribarena "Sandals Fence Fuels Fury" MONDAY, 08 MARCH 2010 06:55http://www.caribarena.com/antigua/tourism/hotels/8530-sandals-fence-fuels-fury.html which states:

"Beachgoers in the **enson Bay area have recorded their disgust with the management at Sandals' decision to erect a makeshift fence which blocks a regular throughway onto the beach..The management at the Sandals Grande Resort and Spa had flatly refused to allow access to the beach via the property.

Tourists who spoke to Caribarena.com noted that they were disappointed with the resort’s actions, especially in light of the high tides. They said because of management’s refusal to allow them to pass, they were forced to tread through the rough waters."

Drawings

#14 Buzzbomb » 2011-06-20 16:35

I am inclined to believe Minister Yearwood over Stewart and Lovell at this point. Robin knows his constituents well, has represented them for decades and is always g** roots and hands on. Tobi's right; we need to see the drawings. In this digital age, every stakeholder, next door neighbour and for that matter every voter has potential access to these documents on their computer, if they are released. This could be a landmark project for our nation, or it could be another Galley Bay gate.

I cannot believe you are so gullible......Y earwood agreed to support the project......no one has said that there will be no public access or that Antiguans cannot use the beach. The vendors will be in a better position to earn a living with the addition of 125 upscale rooms and the rebranding to the Beaches brand..and the beach will still be available to all to use.....isn't **enson Bay still available???? Cmon...Robin and the ALP have been caught napping because the UPP have found someone to make a serious investmen. The ALP said that no one would invest while the UPP was in government . Again the ALP have been proven wrong! It hurts all you haters!!!

Where is the fence?

#10 Tobi » 2011-06-20 14:40

Before we get riled up by politicians, has anyone seen a fence at Pineapple, Long Bay? Has Stewart's plans been seen by anyone in Opposition or by john public? I'm all for public access to the beach. Perhaps we should demand to see the outline plan, and stop tearing off in all directions without any facts.

#8 p i » 2011-06-20 10:47

Lets not stand for any ignorance . Long Bay belongs to us we must stand firm together and fight for what is ours. I was on this beach width Monday and was so happy to see Antiguans, Chinese, Serians, and others enjoying the beach together. This is the only beach i can take my family and friends for a good relaxation when they come for vacation every year.

Lets tear down the fence again and again!

#6 Only in Antigua » 2011-06-20 10:35

Where do politicians come up with these words? Again is it impossible to talk to the people with straight talk and good ideas. We need the development, jobs and investment. We also need public access to this lovely beach. Now let us see if these guys can work that out with clear simple, honest agreements. Woops...
Never mind, its Antigua. Nothing is ever clear, simple or honest.

Good For Antigua!

#4 UncommonSense » 2011-06-20 09:46

Yearwood, took an honorable decision, first to support this project on the condition that it both provided jobs and included the maintain public access to the breach, and second that he met with the vendors to get understand their needs. I suspect that the Hon. Yearwood would have reported his findings to Butch Steward before giving his final blessings to it.

Good for you Sir and good fot the good people of Antigua & Barbuda!

Winston Luke tore it down

#2 Dax Rebel » 2011-06-20 08:54

Dear Bloggers, I remember this incident of the fence being erected at Long Bay. A series of meetings were held by the UPP to build the momentum for the removal of the fence in the water. On the said day, the crowd was large and rowdy, but nothing was done for more than an hour. Then came the late Winston Luke (father of Ivor 'Ninja' Luke) a die-hard PLM/UPP supporter. Although a senior citizen at the time, he lead the charge and tore down the fence. It was then that Phillip Abbott planted the flag and declared it a National Site. May the soul of Winston Luke rest in Heavenly Peace.

In ending, I wish to say: Never Again! Never Again! Preserve the beaches for all its citizens.
