Lovell Chides Yearwood Over Long Bay

Minister LovellAntigua St John's - St Phillip’s North representative Robin Yearwood, whose constituency embraces Long Bay beach, the site of the proposed expansion of the Pineapple Beach Hotel, has drawn severe criticism from Finance Minister Harold Lovell over his stance on the project.

Lovell told ABS TV’s Good Morning Antigua and Barbuda that when Jamaican hotelier Gordon "Butch" Stewart agreed to the expansion, Yearwood was one of the first people he spoke with.

“Mr Yearwood said he supported the project fully, 100 percent, and he even offered to speak with the people at Mama Pasta about the project," Lovell said. "But now I am surprised to hear Mr Yearwood not only singing a different tune, but singing different lyrics as well."

Lovell described a component of the protests at Long Bay beach as "political," and stopped just short of calling Yearwood a liar. “All I would say is that what he is saying now is not consistent with what he said to me in our conversation,” Lovell told viewers.

The finance minister said the project would not displace the vendors, as he had made special representation on their behalf, and Stewart had agreed to add a Vendors’ Arcade as part of the development.

Lovell confirmed that as tourism minister, he assisted the vendors upgrade their operations, and he would never "sell out" the vendors, since all he wants is for them to move to an even higher level.

He also addressed the thorny issue of access to Long Bay, a family favourite particularly on holidays. Lovell said beach access is enshrined in the law, and there is enough land (some six acres) to undertake the project, and to protect the public’s right to the beach. He gave a commitment that he will never "sell out" the country, but said he is keen on having the project started to ensure that the promised employment materializes.

Skewed vision

#23 InteresteD » 2011-06-18 13:00

Where is this skewed vision coming from? Butch Stewart has a history in Antigua. Has he denied anyone from **enson Bay? No! In other countries person are allowed to purchase beach property so they can deny entry. That is not our law so no one can deny. How come all you experts are not crying down Mill Reef that was started under Labour? Which one of you can go to the beach at Mill Reef as you like? I too wish to see the project document so that I can be assured that access will remain and that the vendors will be protected. If as I heard the plan is to build 125 additional top end rooms and rebrand the property as a Beaches then the vendors will be in a much better position to earn more revenue. And who is the owner of Mama Pasta? The French or Canadian lady or the guy from Willikees...... .someone better check.....becau se someone work somewhere does not mean they own it!

Duh,

Long Bay Hotel has been for sale since the late '90's. I was building an investor group to buy the property (not the business) back then, when things were nice and peaceful.

But then Pineapple built their monstrosities on the beach, then Will Smith moved in with his beach chair concession and jet ski industry, and it just seemed that maybe people who loved (and could pay for) peace and quiet should go elsewhere. And they did.

I know I did.

Harold your nose is growing

#21 ALP Pickney » 2011-06-17 21:35

Harold is the biggest L1ar I know. He is known for lying to the people of Antigua for 6 yrs. Anybody who believes that Harold will be forthcoming and honest with them I have a bridge to sell them. I know Harold never disclosed that the vendors will be displaced if and when this expansion takes place. What Harold is offering these people is not an upgrade its a downsize. Shame on you Harold. The most decent thing you can do is to look out for Antigua people first.

Sometimes i wonder if the entire UPP clan along with some of they ignorant supporters, beli eve that we are all fools.Carlisle bay& Guiana Island were not that long ago,Guiana Island which no one in Antigua has ever reaped or will ever reap any benefits from, was rigorously oppossed from any Devl in the name of Antigua,s patrimony, now these same persons who took an investor to court is complaining that persons have alterior motives for speaking out for Long bay, one of the most frequented beaches on island.I really think someone need to let this Govt know that they can no longer fool anyone except those who are just fools, they deceitfulness are an open sepulcher for all to see, they really disgust me.

I know for a fact Long Bay hotel is for sale, I also know that it was offered to Mr. Stewart and he turned down the offer..... why cannot he purchase that hotel for his expansion? If he really has our interest at heart then why is he unwilling to compromise? Then the vendors and our locals will be able to enjoy what we have and he would still get his mega resort at Long Bay.

It would be nice if we had more information, I have been calling for the master plan to be posted in public view so we all know exactly what is planned but all we are getting from the Mr. Lovell is his assurances that all will be well. Unfortunately, I do not believe this man and cannot take his word of assurance especially when he is so willing to give himself and his government a passing grade of 80% on what they have been doing for the past 7 years.

I see alot of comments from folks who think this is just about the vendors. PLM please tell me are you for us locals giving up the use of Long Bay? Do you really believe the lie that we have 365 beaches? How many beaches do we really have where there are hotels to which we have no local or very difficult local access? If the want the vendors moved then why did not they come out with the project master plan for all to see and have confidence that they are not being snowed? Or do you think that its ok for them to keep the actual plans a secret and we Antiguans just have to wait until the project is finished then accept whatever we are given?

I am not one to give xuxy Salad the time of day, but on this issue I will give him two mins!
First of all Lovel belive it or not even a cat has the rights to change his mind at least once in his nine life time.
Secondly I am impress that PS has finally decided to work for his pass votes.
Now Mr Lovel, how many of our beaches are you going to give away preventing the locals from enjoying what we are entltled to?
When was the last time have you Mr Lovel visited the area? When was the last time you took the time out as minsiter of Tourism to talk to the locals in the surrounding areas?
Until then you got some nerve to call PS a "liar"! How many times are we going to have to listern to these "investors" sing the song of needed investment? While in the other side of their mouth they are telling locals " you cant bath here"?

"Lovell described a component of the protests at Long Bay beach as "political," and stopped just short of calling Yearwood a liar."

Well, all hope is not lost. Good to see that not even Harold, "King Lyad" himself, has the testicular fortitude to call another person a liar.

The reverse of an old saying is that we shouldn't do things in opposition that we can't live with in government. Harold made his name in the Carlisle Bay fiasco, which he used to refer to as the "Old Road Uprising". That is where he also earned his stripes as a chameleon. Baldwin even made the statement, "The role of the opposition is to oppose." This is all forgotten now.

Worst?

#10 F. Tree » 2011-06-17 08:17

Mr. Lovell under your administration for the past 7 years, we're ranked as the worst, is this not selling out our country? And this has nothing to do with Global economy, business internal woes etc..

A European publication says Antigua & Barbuda is the worst place in the Caribbean region to put money.

The latest survey released by Euromoney put this twin-island nation at the bottom of the Caribbean list with a score of 9.3. Bermuda was the leading country in the region.

#8 Perplexed » 2011-06-17 08:12

You said you will not 'sell out' our country, so tell me this.... will this new project turn Grande Pineapple into a Beaches resort? If so, then is Mr. Stewart agreeing to deviate from his beaches model to allow for locals to access the beach in front of his Beaches hotel? As far as I know the beaches properties in the Caribbean do not allow access to locals, it is fenced off to deny access to locals so that their guests can enjoy the beach privately.

Never "sell out" The Conutry

#7 F. Tree » 2011-06-17 07:52

He gave a commitment that he will never "sell out" the country...Who brought in the IMF, who is the one blaming Antiguan Business leaders for their "internal woes". Who is the one attempting to tax ever red cent out of our pockets. Who is the one that sanctioned the buying of Food City, Benjamin Building and part of Woods Mall. Who is the one whose administration is causing and enduring Antigua's worst economic period ever.
Who is the one that his administration is losing the peoples respect on a hourly basis.

For someone who will never "sell out" the country, you doing a good job right now.

Why is this so difficult

#6 Perplexed » 2011-06-17 07:51

Mr Lovell, I am inclined to believe you when you guys publish the development plans. Why are you and Mr. Stewart unwilling to publish the plans, I know they have already been drawn up. The opposition to this project would die a quick death, if Mr. Stewart put up a temporary billboard near the property for all to see and feel confident that you guys are not trying to sell us the Eiffel Tower in France. Is this a difficult thing to do?

shame

#5 wadadlichild » 2011-06-17 07:23

They keep pushing this as a vendors issue when clearly so much more is at stake....Once that expansion takes place the hotel will monopolized the beach making it undesirable to locals. It is my opinion that the hotel can be rebuilt without encroaching east. Last time I was at long bay all those rooms next to the break wall were abandoned. We keep giving the best we have to foreigners. What will be left for future generations?

Do some Investigative Work please

#4 UncommonSense » 2011-06-17 07:08

Guys simply resporting what Lovell says is not enough. Do some investigative journalism. Are there inconsistencies with what the minister is saying vs. what the projects will be doing? Is the minister misrepresenting Yearwood's participation to escape political pressure is did Yearwood lie? What is Butch Steward saying about the project as it relates to the Vendors? What are the vendors saying about Lovell? Did he meet with them? What assurances did he provide? Come on.....

#2 skyewill » 2011-06-17 06:45

I am 100% for the hotel expansion. I am also 100% against them putting the vendors off the property. I believe that the vendors should be incorporated into the project and we should make it a policy that any Beach front investment should leave in place the poor people that ply their trade their. Butch is a billioniare and a smart man so he will be able to do just that. There is no Love for Antigua people by these politicians. Maybe Yearwood now see what the vendors point. I do
