UK Couple Enjoys Sandals Vacation After Tragic Year

Antigua St John's - Winning a vacation was the silver lining behind the clouds for British couple Nicola and Peter Allen, who had experienced a year plagued by misfortune.

After completing the winning voucher in their local newspaper, they are now enjoying their stay at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa.

“The good luck was a welcome change for the British couple after a tumultuous year,” the resort’s press release stated. “In June, Mrs. Allen was diagnosed with skin cancer but the melanoma was removed and she felt relieved.”

But just three months later, she sustained life threatening injuries in a catastrophic vehicular accident, to include a broken back, collarbone, shoulder and sternum, a ruptured liver and diaphragm, and a collapsed lung.

Rushed by ambulance to the Norfolk-Norwich Hospital, Mrs. Allen spent more than 10 hours in surgery while her husband waited anxiously.

“I am an eternal optimist and I had to believe that my resilient wife would pull through this even though 90 per cent of people with a ruptured diaphragm do not survive,” Mr. Allen said.

However, his wife survived and miraculously, despite the advice from medical professionals not to attempt walking for six to eight weeks, she was up and about eight days later.

“I was determined to recover quickly and I could not have done it without my devoted husband who has been by my side throughout this ordeal. We are relishing the opportunity to relax and explore this beautiful Antiguan paradise and this is a wonderful way for us to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary,” Mrs. Allen said.

The couple currently resides in Leigh-on-Sea and both of them are nurse practitioners.  They return to England on Wednesday.
