New Chairman for Hotel Association

New Chairman for Hotel AssociationAntigua St John's - The Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association held its annual general meeting at the Sandals Grande Antigua last Thursday, May 24.

The main agenda item was the election of a new executive after Chairman Alistair Forrest's departure last month to take up a new position in Barbados. The board was elected in 2011 to serve for two years, so only one position of director remained to be filled.

After a voting process from the hotel membership, that position was filled by Christopher Eastman, the new general manager at Curtain Bluff.

The membership then elected Andrew Hedley, managing director of Jumby Bay, to serve as chairman for the coming year.

Hedley is no stranger to Antigua, having arrived on the island in 2004 from Point Grace in the Turks and Caicos to take up the position of general manager of Carlisle Bay. He subsequently moved to Jumby Bay in January 2010.

Hedley brings a wealth of experience in the upscale hotel sector, having also worked at Cap Juluca in Anguilla and Peter Island Resort in the BVI. He is originally from Kenya and worked in Botswana and Tanzania before settling with his family in Caribbean.

General Manager of the Jolly Beach Resort & Spa Vernon Jeffers was elected to the position of 1st vice chairman, and Senior VP Hotel Operations with Elite Island Resorts Alex deBrito was elected as 2nd vice chairman.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. From Grant in Aid To FDI the Title fully supports what a youth, idled by the Fiscal Adjustment and Structural Reforms from Living in The IMF's NEST on this SIDS, overcome by the inertia seen all about and fully nutured in the island syndrome of being surrounded by water threw hands in the air in pained resignation & exclaimed that "such is our sorry lot!"
The first reaction was to suggest to the youth to spend the idle time reading St. Lucian and Cribbean Nobel Laureate Dereck Walcott's Epic Poem OMEROS which builds on events that are straight forward where simple fishermen Achille and Hector fight over Helen, a woman they both desire. Walcott expands these basic facts so that Helen comes to personify an island nation historically coveted by North Atlantic Buccaneers from "Culumbus to Castro" documented by Dr. Eric Williams and the lived experience on Antigua & Barbuda including Redonda from Statehood to Independence to Vote Of No Confidence.
The final suggestion was rather than thinking of islands surrounded by water think of islands fixed to the central core of Mother Earth. Education & Creatively.
