Just around the rocks and a five minute drive away from the popular Fryes Beach, Darkwood Beach is set against the green hilly backdrop of Orange Valley, which is protected by the National Parks Authority.
On the other side of a railed bridge and highway, lies a vibrant swamp area perfect for fresh water fishing, and littered with a variety of local birds. From the beach itself, on a clear day, sand-seekers can take in the view of neighboring Montserrat across crystal blue waters.
This ¾ mile stretch of ivory white sand is bordered by mostly young trees, which provide limited shade to beach-goers and allow for ample parking. Almost halfway along the beach, there is a shallow, calmer area of water, sheltered by the coral reefs offering great snorkeling adventures and endless basking in sun and sea for children. This particular spot is also highly favored by the elderly who soak up the seawater close to shore while taking a dose of vitamin D.
Darkwood Beach is a favorite for many locals and visitors alike, especially those in search of safe solitude. The main road runs directly parallel to this pristine stretch but once you are on the beach, there is no other place you would want to be.
During the week there are usually just a handful of persons at Darkwood, in contrast to the weekend where there is more activity with the occasional family picnic or beach party – a lit grill or two, some beach cricket or volley ball or just people enjoying each others company with some roast corn on the co

b or other local delights.
The most fantastic thing about Darkwood Beach is that passersby often succumb to the temptation to stop, pull-over, park and take in the memorable Antiguan sunset.
