Half Moon Bay

Half Moon BayFive minutes after the village of Freetown in the parish of St. Phillips, at the brow of the hill before making ones descent to the beach, it is customary to pause for a few minutes to take in the view of

one of the finest and most tranquil beaches in Antigua. The beach resembles a half-moon and was so called.

This mile long, pink sand beach is located on the south east coast of the country and has long been my favorite beach.  Its coral reefs offer adventure to visitors desirous of snorkeling, while at the same time restricting heavy winds and allowing a cool gentle breeze. On either end of the half moon, the water is shallow, clear and calm, and perfect for children and family oriented water activity.

The northern end of the beach is lined with shady trees and sea-bathers who have had their fill usually pick a spot for an afternoon siesta or two, or maybe set up a picnic blanket for some light refreshments.

On the quarter mile stretch of dirt road approaching the beach, parking space is available along with a fresh water standpipe for use by beach-goers.  At the beginning of that same road is a quaint little restaurant offering local dishes, snacks and drinks. Nearby, visitors can also treat themselves to some horseback riding.
The once first class half Moon Bay Resort was destroyed by hurricane years ago and has not yet been rebuilt.  And because of the distance from the nearest village, Freetown, the beach is usually not crowded, unless of course it’s a public holiday or special event.

Half Moon Bay is perfect for a romantic early evening picnic, a hot fun-filled and splashing day, or an overnight campout.  There is nothing like sitting on the warm pink sand during a full moon on a starry night.  That this is my favorite beach.
