Antigua rainforest tour

Rainforest TourI don’t like heights yet I brushed off this fear when I went with a group of friends to experience an exhilarating tour of Antigua’s wondrous, lush rainforest with Antigua Rainforest Canopy Tours.

When you arrive, you’ll see cables in the air and people on harnesses dangling in the air as they quickly zip by you on these cables.

You wonder – what is this?  Is this sturdy?  Is this safe?  What if I get stuck in the middle? However, you have to muster up your courage and follow the rangers to the entrance.  They will safely fasten you into your harness, offer in-depth safety instructions and then you are off to explore Antigua’s amazing eco-forest.

My tour began with a short hike and then I came to the first platform.  And even though it was intimidating, I remembered I came because I wanted to see and experience this tour.  The ranger attached my harness to the cable and though my first step was scary, whoosh, I was off.  I glided along the cables, zipping quickly to the next side of the gorge with my heart racing and sweat pouring freely from my glands as the speed was faster than anything I ever experienced.  When I reached the next side, there was a ranger there to unhook me.  And I thought, “That wasn’t so bad.”Rainforest Tour

If you’re thinking about doing the tour, there are different options.  You can take smaller courses or the full course.  Being adventurous, I opted for the full course.  After I experienced the first four gorges, my nerves calmed and my legs didn’t buckle as much.  I was enjoying the experience until I reached a huge gorge that measured 300 feet across and a 350 foot plunge.  My fearlessness disappeared.  I watched the other brave souls zoom off, and then it was my turn.

As I was getting attached to the cable, I gathered my composure and then I was off, quickly zipping across the gorge at a fast speed with the wind in my face.  When I reached the other side, I felt a sense of accomplishment.

The rest of the course was a breeze and I wondered why I was scared to begin.  However, to get back to the parking lot, I had to take the ‘Leap of Faith’. I’m not giving you any details – you must experience it for yourself.

This is a perfect afternoon activity for a group of friends, co-workers and family. And when you’re finished, sit and relax with a drink on the veranda and brag about your adventure.
