First Set of Samsung Galaxy Tabs Purchased for Students

‘Galaxy Tab 2’ tablet devicesAntigua St. John's - The first tranche of Android tablets secured as part of the GATE Program are on their way to Antigua and Barbuda, according to Digicel’s marketing manager Troy Byrne on Friday.

In November, the telecommunications company put to rest public concerns about the controversial program’s cost to the public purse, having been initially valued at EC$10 million.

Also, the company announced that instead of the iPads announced by Telecommunications Minister Edmond Mansoor, 4th and 5th form students across the twin-island state will receive Samsung designed and powered ‘Galaxy Tab 2’ tablet devices, complete with the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

Byrne said the tablet costs have been factored into a US$13.5 million investment by the company, which also includes the much talked about two 4G networks (LTE and HSPA+), an ICT Cadet Programme and a Multi-Purpose ICT Training Facility and Special Needs Resource Centre.

“With numerous studies demonstrating the importance of, and benefits to, children learning through technology, this latest announcement is good news for students across Antigua and Barbuda who are set to benefit enormously,” Byrne said.

Company CEO Victor Corcoran, said, “The time to begin preparing our children for the realities of the new workplace is now. As such, we are very proud and excited to be partnering with the Government in the GATE project. We are investing tens of millions of Eastern Caribbean Dollars bringing world class technology to the islands and also supporting the Government and its ambitions of giving young students access to this technology.”

I was disappointed to discover and report through "Learning is Personal" that based on our experiences with Samsung and Android 2.2 we were unable to recommend Android for schools, I also believe the issues are far less impactful with current devices than with devices of 1-2 years ago. Fragmentation is still an issue if you have devices with problems, however Android has come a long way since that time and the odds of having the same kinds of troubles we did in our implementation are much, much lower. Of course, if you do run into them the fragmentation issues will still make them difficult to resolve unless there is an agreement with the device or service provider that includes some sort of ongoing support.

This is not correct, the article you linked states:

Quote:
Learning Untethered contributed a class set of 7" Samsung Galaxy Tabs running the Android 2.2 operating system
While 'fragmentation' may have been loosely considered an obstacle at the time of Android 2.x, Android 4.0 and higher have largely erased those concerns. Regardless of the date of posting, or completion of the study, the hardware and software used is clearly dated.

Being a foot soldier in the education system I know this initiative is not for this time and needs better research and planning. Are there E- books available for core subject areas on these systems? Most classrooms are outfitted with just one or two electrical outlets, are we going to renovate the rooms? When will teachers be trained, especially teachers who have not had recent training in IT?

Morris - Santa Claus time

#3 tenman » 2012-12-08 09:43

Morris even further making your point is the fact that the ipads would have cost about twice more than the Samsung Galaxy tablets. This again is a clear indication that proper research has not been done on this program. We are fooling ourselves with the notion that tax payers will not end up footing this bill. Seems the politicians figure the indirect hidden higher costs is best, so we can all pretend its free and that Santa Claus really does exist

And we wonder why we're having so much financial difficulties? A major initiative of US$13.5M (up from US$10M) that was not forecasted in the budget has become a top priority.

They are clearly not referring to independent studies? A study completed in August this year by Marie Bjerede and Tzaddi Bondi using the same Samsung tablets(see http://www.learninguntethered.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Learning-is-Personal.pdf) concluded that:
Quote:
we aren’t able to recommend Android devices for school implementations. Although we found a number of advantages to using the Android devices that paralleled the features found in iOS devices, the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem combined with its relative immaturity means a higher degree of technical issues are likely to be encountered with no reliable way to address them yet. When different entities develop the operating system, build the devices, sell the devices, and sell the communications services, there is no single entity responsible for the resulting overall user experience with the mobile device.
