Antigua St John's - Cable & Wireless’ 25 year monopoly license on international direct dial telephone calls has ended.
The monopoly regime, which applied to overseas calls originating from and terminating onto fixed lines and mobile phones, expired at midnight last night.
The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has approved international telecommunications services licenses to Digicel, LIME, ACT, and APUA.
A Memorandum of Understanding, which will govern on a contractual and mandatory basis, the relationships between the international telecommunications operators in the post LIME monopoly era, was today signed by Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, Dr. Edmond Mansoor as well as Senior Corporate Executives of Digicel, ACT, LIME and APUA.
During a short ceremony at the Headquarters of the Ministry of Telecommunications, Minister Mansoor thanked LIME for its role in the development of the telecommunications sector, and invited all telecommunications operators to continue their dialogue with the Government and to accelerate their investments in new technologies.
