C&W Monopoly About to End

Minister Dr. MansoorAntigua St john's - Cable & Wireless' monopoly on international calls will expire on June 23.

Antigua & Barbuda's Ministry of Information Technology is taking steps to usher in the change by holding discussions with all the major telecommunications companies, including LIME, APUA, Digicel, and Antigua Computer Technology (ACT).

In a public meeting held by the United Progressive Party (UPP), IT Minister Dr Edmond Mansoor said he expects the cost of international calls to decrease by as much as 50 percent.

"I believe the cost of overseas calls, depending on where you're calling, those calls are likely to decrease somewhere between 15 percent to 50 percent," the minister said.

The minister added that in addition to the decreased costs, an increased level of choice will be available to consumers in Antigua and Barbuda as the market opens to competition

@ Southern Beauty & Tenman - Corruption Is Not A Charitable Game!

#12 John French II » 2012-05-25 02:11

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Our UN Ambassador should be most familiar with the Title. Reds would be more successful to turn a new leaf and expose such Nefarious Connections and Activities of local organized-crime syndicates. Quote:
“In poorer countries corruption has a … devastating and immediate impact. It diverts public expenditure away from areas such as health and education in which bribery returns may be small, to more lucrative sectors such as construction, defence, ... The poor end up paying directly for the consequences of contracts that have been signed in corrupt circumstances. They are most affected by “white elephant” projects such as power plants ... that fail to meet their stated objectives ... and cause environmental damage. In the energy sector, they are affected by contracts awarded in dubious circumstances that have locked governments into paying excessively high rates for electricity, which are often passed on to the consumer in the form of higher tariffs.” UN Convention against Corruption.

John French II, I am quite aware of the connections with the (newly arrived since around 2004) red telecom company, the Computer tech company, The Daily newspaper and the government of Antigua partcularly the IT department. I recall the incident with Board of Ed where tender was manipulated and an investigation that went to naught. I am aware of the fact that local companies which tender against this company always lose, no matter how competitive their bid. I have had personal experience where the owner has made it clear that cash is not an issue for him. The said private companies are always willing to back the government when their backs are against the wall (eg the promised free internet in specific constituencies) . The only media house with a Daily newspaper seems too willing to do PR for the red new arrival. One does not have to imagine long what promises have been made.

Conflict of INterest

#8 Southern Beauty » 2012-05-24 17:42

John French, seem its only the international banks that know how to deal with COI (conflict of interest) - they escort you out of the bank! Not the GoB - now or then and probably still to come - they reward it! Big up Minister of Conflict all over the region while his cousins computer business climb higher and higher and your government owned business goes bankrupt! Who the bank deems unethical, hire them quick . . . even if they not on your side, politically that is! Niggers and revolution, never the two will meet.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. That many were most dismissive of the CA's writer on this issue of Conflict of Interest can be found in the comments to Antigua Plagued By Conflict Of Interest & again Apathy Begets Apathy. We did so to our own blinding detriment.
In comments by this voice in the wilderness titled: Each Endeavouring. All Achieving! Nation Building & National Consciousness! Quote:

Had Content taken the offer and researched the Lenovo Reseller, she/he most certainly would have redeemed him/herself and moved to the Head of The Class.
Tenman, it was never my intent to either embar** of compromise your professional ethics or business alliances by asking you the question of Lenovo Reseller.Any who are blind to COI. Ask, with GoAB's Distribution of Lenovo Computers, Who is the Licensed Reseller? See The Connection? COI?

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. C&W's exit from the LD monopoly should have ushered in a Gilded Age for APUA and The People of Antigua & Barbuda. Not so to those Living In The IMF's NEST of Fiscal Adjustment & Structural Reform clothed in the robes of North Atlantic, Arab & Future Oriental Buccaneers.

Too late

#5 Steadyj » 2012-05-24 14:21

VoIP is the future new phone communications, and our country has fallen way behind on this, because of their financial arrangement with LIME. There has been no longer term planning or strategy put in place in Antigua with regards to telecom.

Countries such India has embraced and l leverage VoIP technology, hence all they have a lot of call centers operating there now. Why would any company want to set up a call center in Antigua, and have to route their call through LIME? That would be cost prohibitive. Call centers operation today VoIP? Hell, APUA and LIME is the biggest user of this technology.

But wait!!

#4 young analyst » 2012-05-24 11:41

Can someone inform me as to how much money the government have been collecting from LIME for these overseas calls, from taxes that were paid in? so whilst on one hand it will free up the industry abit, but wait less revenue for the government. hmmmmm

It would be positive, if the opportunity is not lost. A Telephone call from Antigua to the US ($2.50 per min excluding tax) vs. one from one of the neighboring islands (St. Lucia $1.25) to the US. These lower costs could create a better atmosphere for attracting call centers. However, didn't Mansoor make the same promise where the fiber optic lines were concerned? We were promised lower internet rates, yet the cost for broadband internet is almost 3 times more in Antigua vs a similar higher end package (2Mg Download) in Saint Lucia (85-SLU vs 295+15% - 339.25 APUA Inet).

THIS Is Our Focus?

#1 Southern Beauty » 2012-05-24 07:45

So, while our electric bills are sky rocketing, Mansoor has been allowed to focus on long distance calls. Seriously, long distance call**eresting how family relative ACT has elevated to the point of being a telecommunicati on giant . . . wonder how that happened? In the age of Magic Jack, etc. long distance calls is the need of the country? Really can't wait to see what happens to US when the long distance and IMobile revenue used by APUA to supplement water and electric go out the window. Has the government invested in the capital and other expenditures needed to support APUA bid to remain competitive or it this all by design? We're so busy playing politics, we let the real issues go by unnoticed.
