Sports Minister Celebrates Football Success

Minister Winston WilliamsAntigua St John's - Minister of State with responsibility for Sports Winston Williams has reacted to the recent success of the national football team against Haiti in the game which would determine which Group F team would advance to the next round.

"This win for the National Football Team marks yet another historic moment in sports for Antigua and Barbuda," he said.

Senator Williams was present among thousands of football fans and supporters at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium to cheer on the team and congratulate them on achieving their goal. In the midst of the excitement however, the minister was quick to add that this achievement was not accidental, but the result of years of planning and hard work by the national football association and hundreds of hours of rigourous training and countless competitions by a talented, committed and hard working team of players.

He congratulated the executive and members of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA), who have worked hard over the years to make football the  number one spectator sport in the nation. Special mention was also made of the vision and strategic approach to planning by the president and general secretary of the ABFA.

According to Senator Williams, the ABFA technical training unit, including the technical director, Tom Curtis, football coaches, officials, and support staff should continue to develop what they had referred to earlier in the year as the "Antiguan and Barbudan Football Playing Philosophy" to ensure that talented players are identified early and nurtured into world-class footballers. The minister said that other associations should also recognise that without a clearly defined pathway for players, from the youth to the national level, a sustainable system for winning gold will not be easily achieved.

Minister Williams also acknowledged that as the national football team continues on its journey towards the World Cup, the cost of participation will increase significantly. He said, "While it is hoped that there will be rewards associated with the increased  exposure, these are not expected to meet the immediate financial needs of the association and team, so it is my intention to approach the Ministry of Finance to explore any opportunities which are available to provide assistance to the ABFA once this is required."

He added, "The entire nation of Antigua & Barbuda has been inspired by this win, and the entire nation, including the private and public sectors, must also rise to the occasion to provide whatever financial support is required to move the team to the next level. The main focus now for the national football team should be on playing at their best and working for the ultimate goal, that of winning."

As for the support on the night of the game, Senator Williams stated that in his experience, it was the largest crowd he had ever seen at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium. He showered praise on all Antiguans and Barbudans who were present, and also commended Minister of Tourism John Maginley and the board of management of the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium for facilitating the FIFA Game.

The Antigua and Barbuda Royal Police Force and Fire Service, the Emergency Medical Services, and private security firms did not miss out on appreciative comments from the senator either.
The enterprising efforts of  George Hourani/Cool and Smooth, in providing national team uniform replicas for fans, was highlighted by the minister for bringing an added sense of pride and unity with the team. He added that the collective contribution of all underscored the fact that sporting events require the input of all stakeholders for successful implementation.

Senator Williams expressed the hope that as the government continues to work with national sports associations and other key stakeholders to make Antigua & Barbuda the sporting Mecca of the OECS, and that the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium and other sporting venues and facilities will be teaming with fans and supporters as a range of top tier sports and recreational events are scheduled throughout the year.

"It is our hope in the Office of the Minister of State with responsibility for sports that we will soon achieve the goal of making sports and recreation, a viable economic sector," Williams said. "After seven years of serving as the Minister of State with responsibility for Sports, I am beginning to see some of our greatest days as we move towards becoming a stronger sporting nation."

Team Antigua and Barbuda is scheduled to play the return leg of the qualifiers in Haiti on Tuesday November 15.

Congratulations Antigua

Congratulations to everyone involved in getting Antigua so far in the qualifying stages of the World Cup. This a great opportunity to market your football team; not only at home but around the globe as well. I currently live in London, and I recall that when Jamaica, and then, Trinidad & Tobago had successful World Cup campaigns their marketing & merchandising went into overdrive, and was second to none; there were football shirts; scarfs; car stickers and all types of merchandise available that by the time that both these Caribbean teams were knocked out, their associations had made a mint; which has helped fund further cup expeditions. I have traveled to your beautiful island on quite a few occasions (my wife is from Antigua) and tried to purchase an Antiguan jersey, and I just could not get hold of one ... Antigua, do not miss out on this great opportunity to place your name around the globe!!

Saturday was the 9th Anniversay of the passing of the late Leonard Tim Hector. If he were around today Antigua & Barbuda's success in the Concacaf qualifying round would have men't a lot to him. Fan the Flames would be lit up . His story would have made headlines in sporting news worldwide. He would be a happy man. Tim unearthed FIFA's scholarships in the Ministry, unknown to many of their availability, two football coaches benefited and went off to Mexico on scholarships. May his soul rest in peace.

Congratulations to Antigua & Barbuda for the umpteemth time. Since Friday night I have informing all and sundry about our success here in Miami on the radio and the internet. It is a victory well deserved. No one should really blame Peter Byers at this time; he help us reach where we were are, having scored 8 goals in the tournament so far. He was marked out of the game and that allowed someone else to be unmarked. This is not time for blame. It is time for us to go to Haiti and beat them in their backyard. They are despondent and we need to treat these games very seriously and use them as practice to measure our progress for siffer competiton. We will come up against Jamaica, USA and Guatermala next year so there is sample time to arrange some friendly Internationals. We need to play some tougher opposition. The journey has just begun. You can do it if you believe you can. Good luck.

Statistics proves Skepple is our best Striker

#6 Bludy Bloke » 2011-11-14 13:05

Guys I am not disputing the fact that Peter Byers is not a good player. Niether am I saying that he is not an asset to the National team. Of course Peter Byers is certainly a force to reckon with. However, All I am saying is that the statistics from our domestic league has proven that Arab Skepple can be considered as our best striker and yet still he remain on the bench for toooooooooooooo ooooooooooooo long. WHY???

Teams cannot take a chance at marking Big pete one on one, they have to send 2 players at him eveytime and if you have a good understanding of Football you will know that gives Antigua an automatic advantage even if he dosen't score. By the way he has been getting the job done, he is the leading scorer in the whole world cup qualifying (that is world wide). Never before in the history of Antigua.
I do think however that Arab should get more of a look in these games but you cannot discount Big Pete's value to the team.

The reason it was so easy and have been easy for any other player on the national team to score is because the same peter byers is always covered by 2 or 3 defenders thus making the others free/unmarked and are able to take a shot. The peter byers is a very valuable player even if he doesn't score.

Stop with your biasness. Skepple is the hero of the day, no doubt. But to say that Byers hasn't proven he can be relied on is foolish. He is the second leading goal scorer in the entire CONCACAF qualifiers to date http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_%28CONCACAF%29#Goalscorers

He has certainly capitalised on his opportunities.

The rejected stone becomes the head corner stone

#1 Bludy Bloke » 2011-11-14 08:45

Can you imagine that the stone that the builder reject has now become the head corner stone. It is so sad to see the torture that SKEPPLE /ARAB has gone through with the national football side. For the past seasons, The young man has proven himself to be our best striker, yet still, the administrators has giving him such a hard time. Why?? Their #1 striker Peter Byers who they rely on has not yet proven to us that he able to get the job done. The administrators need to wake up and smell the coffee. Plz give the man some justice
