Antigua St. John's - Golfers from Antigua & Barbuda have returned home from Guadeloupe with the coveted ECGA title after overcoming what the team’s captain Paul Michael says were a series of challenges.
The 2012 overall team included Super Seniors Michael Pigott and Everett Lake; Seniors Xabier Ross, David Leonard and Connie Nicholas; along with Omarry James, Stan Fredericks, Navin Singh, Dion Massiah, and Captain R. Paul Michael.
“Each division was in good spirits and felt very positive about their chances of competing for their title,” Michael said.
He told Caribarena that on day 1 of the tournament, his team met the tournament well volunteered, but not quite player-guest friendly.
“The major complaint was the lack of any putts going in the hole. Despite these issues, the Senior team managed to find themselves in the fight at 2nd place, gross and net, while the Men's team had two of the 4 lowest scores on the course for the day, propelling them into 1st place Gross over perennial champion St. Kitts by 8 strokes,” Michael said.
He added that although the Super Seniors did not score well, they too found light between the clouds and capitalized on the many opportunities left on the course.
“To a man, each member conveyed their lack of capitalizing on opportunities on the first day during the meeting, and we concluded with a strong push toward winning to close our day 1,” he said.
On day 2, Michael recounts that the Super Seniors, who got on a roll early, lost energy and focus at the end to finish just short of notoriety. He added that the Seniors managed to put together a more solid round only to lose a player due to a rules violation, resulting in the nullification of his first day low score causing the team to be pushed out of contention.
