Antigua St. John’s - After two days of intense and very competitive golf and 30 minutes of checking and rechecking scores, avid golfer Sir Vivian Richards -- brand ambassador for APUA and veteran player Errol Samuel emerged as the winning Antigua & Barbuda pair at the INET International Pairs Caribbean Tournament.
The tournament was played at Cedar Valley golf Course last weekend.
At the end of the two rounds, three pairs Richards/Samuel, Massiah/Frederick and Norford/Raffoul had amassed 81 points and it took a count back of their scores over the back nine to find the pair with the most points.
Although Richards/Samuel were victorious it took another count back to hole six before Caribbean International Pairs champions Adrian Norford of St. Kitts & Nevis and Max Raffoul of Dominica emerged as overall champions.
The players received their prizes at an awards cocktail held at the Ciboney Lounge, Halcyon Cove Hotel and Inet, the title sponsor for the past four years, are ecstatic about this year’s result.
“We are very happy and proud to be the title sponsor of this wonderful event and we wish all the winners great success in Scotland,” said Curtis McKay, APUA Telecommunications Manager.
Both winning pairs will be going to Scotland to represent Antigua & Barbuda and the wider Caribbean and this, according to Zorol Barthley CEO of Golf Experience Caribbean the organisers of the Inet International Pairs Caribbean Tournament, will be a first:
“The level of competition was fabulous ... all of the golfers strived to have the honour of representing their country and region. And I want to say hearty congratulations to Sir Viv and Errol Samuel, both of whom are amazing ambassadors of the game.
“I also want to congratulate the Caribbean pair of Adrian Norford of St. Kitts & Nevis and Max Raffoul of Dominica for showing us that integration in sports only makes us stronger.”
Raffoul is hoping that his victory will inspire players in the nature isle.
“It is an absolute honour to win despite there being no golf course in my home land and I am hoping that one day all my hard work across the region will result in a golf course of our own in Dominica,” he said.
His playing partner Norford thanked God for this achievement and said he found the whole experience to be wonderful. He suggests that it will further enhance golf in St. Kitts as the country establishes itself as a major golfing destination in the Caribbean.
His sentiments are shared by the Trinidad & Tobago players organised by Richard Lara.
“I want to thank you for an excellent week, it was a fantastic tournament and we applaud Zorol and his team.”
Lara added that the players were more than impressed with the course.
“In speaking to the Trinidad & Tobago players, many of whom have travelled throughout the region playing golf, we have found that without exception, the golf course (Cedar Valley) is one of the best in the Caribbean – the layout, the views … and if you add the greens of Sandy Lane or Great Westmoreland it will be the best course in the Caribbean. And I want to encourage the Government to invest in this golf course as it is a gem in the Caribbean.”
The Trinidad & Tobago players stated that they will be back to participate in the 2013 event, slated for September 6 and 7.
Richards/Samuel and Norford/Raffoul each received trophies donated by Golf Experience Caribbean, INET tablets, a bottle each of Johnnie Walker Gold Label and Guess watches from Colombian Emeralds International.
The second place winners Antigua & Barbuda pair Dion Massiah and Stan Frederick (81 points on count back) and Caribbean Pair Clint Alfred and Neal Edmund of Trinidad & Tobago (76 points) each received trophies donated by Golf Experience Caribbean, one bottle each of Johnnie Walker Green Label and a goody bag from Colombian Emeralds International.

GREAT JOB!!!
I am surprised that for a natural Nature Park that Dominica is, there are no courses there. WOW!
We know that it's an expensive sport and a lot of youths/parents cannot afford the gear's but just as it was with cricket many blue caribbean sky moons ago, the same can be said of cricket, when Sir Viv's love and enthusiasm for cricket did not hamper his progress as a youth
The coconut bow bat comes to mind
..CREATIVE INNOVATION...an d I know, that, once our youths in the Caribbean apply this same innovativeness, a green jacket at Agusta Georgia or a Rider Cup won't be long in landing on our shores. Congrats once again.
