Plans on Target for INET C’bean Cycling Championships

Tamiko ButlerAntigua St. John’s - Plans are progressing smoothly for the hosting of the biggest cycling event in the history of Antigua & Barbuda on October 20 – 21st and the Antigua & Barbuda Cycling Association is pleased to announce INET as the title sponsor.

Other Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors for the 2012 INET Caribbean Cycling Championships include the Observer Media Group, the National Olympic Committee, Lucozade, Sign Pro and Stonewall Reloaded, but the association is still seeking additional sponsorship to make the event a success.

The extremely highly competitive event has in the past attracted more than 90 riders from across 24 Caribbean nations. These athletes normally comprise most of the region’s foreign-based professional and semi-professional riders who are selected to represent their nations at this level.

To date, the number of competitors confirmation has revealed that the Antigua & Barbuda event is attracting a record number of the region’s best.

The local organising committee is happy with the progress so far and said everything is on target according to the plan and timelines.

So far, confirmation for participation in the 12th Caribbean Cycling Championships has been received from 18 countries.

These are: Bermuda, Barbados, Belize, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guyana, Suriname, St Lucia, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Croix, Jamaica, Curacao, Guyana, Anguilla, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and Tortola BVI.

Grenada, Dominican Republic, Aruba, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, Haiti, St. Maarten and Bonaire have not yet confirmed their participation.

The events will be held over a two-day period and will start at 9:30 am on both days. The road on the eastern side of Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds has been designated for the start/finish and the main entertainment venue.

Saturday 20th October will be the Male (24-mile) and Female (12-mile) Individual Time Trial. Four of the country’s top male riders will contest for the top honours and our very own Tamiko Butler will defend her Caribbean title, Reigning 2011 Caribbean Female Time Trial Champion.

Sunday 21st October will be the climax of the event the male and female mass start Road Race. The females will go for 42 miles whilst the males will contest for the ultimate Caribbean title in the 84-mile Road Race.
