Juniors off to ITF Junior Tournament

Juniors off to ITF Junior TournamentAntigua St. John's - Six juniors tennis players are currently competing in the Coca Cola Junior Tournament in St Lucia, where the under 14 round robin qualifiers and under 18 qualifiers were held on Sunday.

Competing for Antigua & Barbuda in the Grade 5 tournament are Under 14 players Jessica Isaac, Cordell Williams Jr and Justice Christopher; and Under 18 players D'Jeri Raymond, Shakir Elvin and Jody Maginley.

Maginley and Raymond already received direct entry into the main draw and will commence play Tuesday.

In the boys Under 18 qualifiers, Elvin easily advanced to the final round by defeating Brian Williams of Grenada in round one 6-0, 6-0. He then defeated Justin Higgs of Bahamas 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the qualifying round finals.

In the girls under 14 round robin qualifiers Isaac was successful in both of her matches. These two wins garantee her a spot in the main draw scheduled to start on Tuesday 7th August. In her first match of the day Isaac defeated Surabhi Gupta of St. Lucia 4-1, 4-0; she then went on to take out Luka Lyttle of St. Vincent in straight set 4-0, 4-2.  Isaac is scheduled to play her final round robin qualifier on August 6.

The boys Under 14 round robin qualifiers saw mixed results as Williams Jr was successful in one of his two matches. In match one he was defeated by Shaquille Jn. Mari (LCA) 1-4, 1-4. However a major turnaround was seen in match 2 where Williams Jr ousted De Jennis Simmons (VIN) 4-1, 4-0.

Williams, who is in a round robin group of four, will have to overcome Taquel Lewis
of St. Lucia to easily advance to the main draw.

Christopher, who is in a round robin group of three, was unsuccessful in his only two round robin matches. He came up against Jean Phillip Murray of LCA and lost 0-4, 0-4. Later, he came up against Nabeel Mohammed of Trinidad, losing 0-4, 0-4.

Special thanks the National Olympic Committee who provided the athletes airfare, the Antigua & Barbuda Tennis Association, Jolly Harbour Tennis Academy, Ministry of Sports, and the parents, without whom this would not have been possible.
