Greene Seeks Help for Local Athletes

Senator Paul Chet GreeneAntigua St. John’s - Several important initiatives are taking place in London, venue of the 2012 Olympic Games, that will have a positive impact on the development of sports in Antigua & Barbuda.

President of the National Olympic Association (NOC), Senator Paul Chet Greene, will lead a delegation that will hold talks on Monday with Antigua & Barbuda High Commissioner in London, Dr Carl Roberts.

According to Greene, a wide range of issues related to sports is down for discussion at the meeting. Chief among them will be British scholarships for Antiguan and Barbudan athletes and technical support in cycling, football, swimming and netball.

The NOC president says the NOC will also be looking at opportunities for high performance training in the UK for national athletes.

Senator Greene adds that an initiative is currently under discussion for an evaluation of the country’s sports programme with a UK university, and that the researchers will be visiting Antigua in August.

He believes that the time has come for sports to be high on the agenda of all of the country’s overseas missions.

Greene added that the Antiguan and Barbudan team is adjusting well in London, and that the British have pulled out all the stops to ensure that the London Games go smoothly.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, John Maginley will be visiting Team Antigua & Barbuda, including officials and athletes on Monday. Maginley will be having lunch with the team at the Athletes’ Village, where he is expected to deliver a motivational and uplifting message to the athletes.

The Chairman of CARICOM, Prime Minister of St Lucia, Dr. Kenny Anthony will be dropping by as well as part of a region wide visitation to Caribbean athletes on Thursday.

Another non-news article from Caribarena.

What exactly have I learned? That the head of the NOC, after years at the helm is now 'talking' about the programs that should have been implemented years ago. It comes as no surprise that we are again placed in the enviable position of having more delegates than athletes at these games, a reflection of where our taxpayers dollars are being invested.

In fact Antiguan athletes should be selected based on their individual times as it relates to other international athletes in their disciplines and not just for winning a race.

Is is obvious the this and to an extent the former government has really drop the ball with sports. There is practically no school program in place for the different disciplines, practically nothing in place for atheletes for after high school. Now i will applaud Hon Greene for this gesture, however its long overdue, why wait until now. Football has no home, cricket has to share the venue, ARG rotting away and i heard about the sports village that is suppose to be errected. Finanlly i had the chance to look at the priority areas for the national scholarship and out of the 10 different areas SPORTS was absolutly last, so anyone wanting to consider study in a sports related field would be considered last. Mr. Greene nad Mr Minister(square per in round hole) please time to stop politicing and get moving, something must be done.

Things That Make You go Hmmmm!

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Full Disclosure: Thorughly Enjoy Sports, Olympics, the athletes and their exploits.
Having seen the Huge Capital Expenditure in long lasting infrastructure in the developed world and who benefits have some doubts as to the value for SIDS.
Where is the Return on Equity or Investment. The Circus always wins on the Entertainment Value.
We must begin to think Strategically. Visionary Leadership into New Waters with Limited Resources.
Some observations: Antigua & Barbuda is dependent on Tourism and Yachting for 75% of its Revenues and Employment; This SIDS is surrounded by sand & water, which are the primary reason for Tourism & Yachting; There are water & sand sports a plenty at the Games.
Where is the Linkage for A&B? New Direction: Sailing, Rowing, Swimming, Diving, Beach Volley Ball, Synchro Swimming, Diving, etc. Increase the Return on Equity/Investme nt to develop and implement horizontal and vertical integration of Tourism, Yachting & Fishery.
Suggest disbanding the Army and strengthening the Coast Guard. Unemployed youth into Coast Guard Cadets - teach sailing.
