Junior Tennis Players Compete Overseas

photo - wildwoodracquetclub.olhblogspace.comAntigua St. John’s – Young tennis players have been hard at work representing Antigua and Barbuda in regional tournaments for the past three weeks, but that was only the beginning.

According to an Antigua and Barbuda Tennis Association (ABTA) release, the Under-12 team placed 9th out of a field of ten countries at the second annual COTECC Wilson Cup 12 & under championships.

“This is Antigua and Barbuda’s first time entering this competition, but with the promised support of Caribbean Union Bank we will continue to develop our juniors to be a part of this prestigious tournament. Maybe, next year, we will have both a Boys’ and Girls’ team,” the ABTA said.

Competition continues this weekend with a number of Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, and Under-18 players travelling overseas to take part in various tournaments.

For the second year, the U12 juniors will be competing in the Coco Cola junior tournament, and flying Antigua and Barbuda’s flag will be Ashley Bersma and Nicholas Fuller. The youngest player of the lot, Aiden Fuller, will be competing in the U10 category.

This is the first time, however, that these junior athletes will be competing outside of Antigua and Barbuda.

Meanwhile, the National Olympic Committee sponsored-JITIC (Jr. International Tennis Championship) Team also leaves for El Salvador where they will keenly contest 150 of their peers from Central America and the Caribbean.

The team consists of U16 player Shakir Elvin, and U14 players Cordell Williams Jr, Justice Christopher, D’Jeri Raymond, and Jessica Isaac.

Later, and with the addition of Jody Maginley, this team will then move on to the Coco Cola International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior tournament, SVG ITF Junior tournament and ITF Tobago, which will complete what has been dubbed the summer tour.
