Williams Admits Receiving Per Diem Letter

Williams Admits Receiving Per Diem LetterAntigua St. John’s - Minister responsible for Sports, Winston Williams, has now admitted that his ministry did receive a letter from the Antigua and Barbuda Olympic Association (ABOA) requesting assistance in the form of per diem for the athletes and officials attending the London Games starting this weekend…albeit, he said, it arrived late.

This after he issued a poorly captioned press release on Monday denying receipt of the letter that questioned the “legitimacy” of a Caribarena.com article of the same day. Williams, however, added that the letter arrived long after the 60-day deadline by which such requests are to be made.

According to Williams, the letter to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports was dated July 19, but only arrived on July 23. He said he has since forwarded the letter to a specially appointed committee that handles such requests for their review and recommendation.

The matter of the request for per diem for the athletes was contained in an ABS Television news report by Terry Andrews aired at 7 pm on Saturday, July 21. The report dealt with the presentation of a shirt and pin to Prime Minister, Baldwin Spencer, by president of ABOA, Senator Paul Chet Greene.

Sources at the ABOA say that the letter requesting the per diem was late because it could not be properly ascertained until the exact size of the delegation was determined. When this was completed, the ABOA accounts committee compiled the figures and dispatched them to the Ministry of Sports.

Additionally, Caribarena.com understands that verbal discussions were held with Williams concerning the request for the financial assistance and that he was notified that a formal letter would follow after the delegation was finalized.

There is information that suggests that the government has been tardy in providing financial assistance to athletes attending international meets. This goes back many years, according to Caribarena.com sources.

Per Diem for athletes and officials should be automatic. How can the minister explain receiving per diem for the Olympics and the Athletes and officials none. Per Diem request cannot be requested before the delegation has been finalized. Until recently athletes were still trying to meet qualifying standards making a 60 day per diem request impossible. Can we honestly celebrate their achievements knowing fully well that we did not even supply them with requested per diem.

Your UPP regime has spend 57 million on "fencing" a old Olympic sports that Caribbean politicians excel in. now that's what you call a significant contribution( to friends and cronies).
every player that has participated in the fencing has received Gold lots of it pure tax gold. coincidental "fencing" is also popular slang to describe the selling of stolen goods. PLM do you think giving away tax money stolen from us the people could be called fencing? ooops sorry Chef asked you if you think, Think??? how stupid of me I apologize my mistake PLM have a nice day and don't drink any house hold cleaners even if they smell nice. having said all that Chef would not give the likes of Chet green or Dr Benjamin a second of his time let alone a red cent or a blue Dime. our Olympic athletes yes they should have been given they represent us Antigua A nation our nation should they go out and beg in London???

These people should have secured sponsorships from the private sector two years ago. We don’t have money to waste on track meets.

So the olympic committee knew about 4 years ago that these games will be this year, so are you saying that the waited until the last minute to request. something sounds fishy here, just not adding up.

Antigua has more beaches than square miles yet it took four days for a letter to go across the street. Wow! It is clear this government cares nothing about its people. Should one or more of these athlete medal at the games, then you will see the same Winston Williams and the likes papyshowing themselves as though they made it happen. It is only now people want to talk about all the assitance Barracudas/Anti gua national team get? The answer to that can be found in who owns Barracudas. This country is in a real mess. To the athletes we say, "Go and represent us". Winston Williams has failed in that regard over and over again.

barracudas a last place team in a 3 division semi pro league can get bail out after bailout of 80,000 us ,100,000 us and our Olympic athletes have to beg for assistance. I thought winston"fencesi ck" williams is the junior minister of sports, and Jackie quinn is the substantive minister. is everything in sports left to this kid in a candy shop? he should have been discarded long long time. i guess he has a god father in the upp, anyway its all the same quite an incompetent bunch.

Come on Everton Barnes and Caribarena your caption on this story is very misleading. It gives the impression that the letter was there all the time and the Minister lied!! Timeline of facts are that a programme was aired on Sat 21 at 7pm, then an article appeared on Caribarena on Mon 23, the Minister denies request then a letter was received the same day Mon 23 but dated the 19th. Sounds very suspect to me and lets just assume that the letter was sent on the 19th did the Olympic Team expect process and approval and money to be delivered to them before they went to London in less than a week?? be real

...pure incompetence...

#2 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-07-25 05:48

Greetings, as more and more facts come to light regarding a simple matter, it once again shows the incompetence of how the peoples business is conducted in our Nation.
Even if the Olympic Committee could not ascertain the number of individuals travelling, the request should have been formally made in writing. It could then be easily appended.
The as Ministry of Sports should be involved/inform ed, kept abreast at least a year in advance as to the needs of the athletes and the Olympic Committee.
Proper planning, and communication would have avoided this fiasco. Then again, this is "Cirque de la Antigua" where each act is rewarded, gets a louder applause for incompetence... .

First there was no letter then an admission

#1 Aha » 2012-07-25 05:41

I find it more than passing strange that this minister fellow would now without an apology admit to receiving a letter of request from the olympic committee. Even stranger is the notion that a national team would have to go cap in hand begging for any kind of support from government. It should be automatic.
This minister and government should be glad to give assistance to the olympic committee after all the support that Chet Greene and his team have provide to them and sports in general. Did I read in today's Observer that the olympic committee even funded the young athletes who went to Jamaica the other day for the Caribbean teachers union athletic event? Where was the ministry?
Waive the stupid 60 day rule and give our athletes the assistance. Barracudas a private club gets hundreds of thousands more
