Antigua St. John’s - Minister responsible for Sports, Winston Williams, has now admitted that his ministry did receive a letter from the Antigua and Barbuda Olympic Association (ABOA) requesting assistance in the form of per diem for the athletes and officials attending the London Games starting this weekend…albeit, he said, it arrived late.
This after he issued a poorly captioned press release on Monday denying receipt of the letter that questioned the “legitimacy” of a Caribarena.com article of the same day. Williams, however, added that the letter arrived long after the 60-day deadline by which such requests are to be made.
According to Williams, the letter to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports was dated July 19, but only arrived on July 23. He said he has since forwarded the letter to a specially appointed committee that handles such requests for their review and recommendation.
The matter of the request for per diem for the athletes was contained in an ABS Television news report by Terry Andrews aired at 7 pm on Saturday, July 21. The report dealt with the presentation of a shirt and pin to Prime Minister, Baldwin Spencer, by president of ABOA, Senator Paul Chet Greene.

plm you are so smart it hurts
Your UPP regime has spend 57 million on "fencing" a old Olympic sports that Caribbean politicians excel in. now that's what you call a significant contribution( to friends and cronies).
every player that has participated in the fencing has received Gold lots of it pure tax gold. coincidental "fencing" is also popular slang to describe the selling of stolen goods. PLM do you think giving away tax money stolen from us the people could be called fencing? ooops sorry Chef asked you if you think, Think??? how stupid of me I apologize my mistake PLM have a nice day and don't drink any house hold cleaners even if they smell nice. having said all that Chef would not give the likes of Chet green or Dr Benjamin a second of his time let alone a red cent or a blue Dime. our Olympic athletes yes they should have been given they represent us Antigua A nation our nation should they go out and beg in London???

Hmmmm
...pure incompetence...
Even if the Olympic Committee could not ascertain the number of individuals travelling, the request should have been formally made in writing. It could then be easily appended.
The as Ministry of Sports should be involved/inform ed, kept abreast at least a year in advance as to the needs of the athletes and the Olympic Committee.
Proper planning, and communication would have avoided this fiasco. Then again, this is "Cirque de la Antigua" where each act is rewarded, gets a louder applause for incompetence... .

First there was no letter then an admission
This minister and government should be glad to give assistance to the olympic committee after all the support that Chet Greene and his team have provide to them and sports in general. Did I read in today's Observer that the olympic committee even funded the young athletes who went to Jamaica the other day for the Caribbean teachers union athletic event? Where was the ministry?
Waive the stupid 60 day rule and give our athletes the assistance. Barracudas a private club gets hundreds of thousands more
