Antigua St. John’s – Three members of Guyana’s National Junior and Senior cycling squad competed in the popular 12-lap Billy’s Food Mart Friar’s Hill Challenge last Sunday, and one of them got the best of last year’s champion, Jyme Bridges.
Raynauth Jeffery of Guyana Junior National Team won the race after attacking the group of elite riders in the 10th lap to create a lead and win by over a minute ahead of his closest rival, in 2:07.08.
His compatriots were Paul De Nobrega and Walter Grant-Stuart.
Second place was decided by a sprint showdown between Bridges of the Rattlers Club and Godfrey Pollydore. Bridges edged Pollydore to place 2nd, beating Pollydore in a sprint for the first time this season. Pollydore had to settle for 3rd in a time of 2:08.25. Robert Marsh, Paul De Nobrega and Walter Grant-Stuart were 4th, 5th and 6th, respectively.
The race was mostly led by Marsh, Bridges, Pollydore and De Nobrega, with Marvin Spencer, Andre Simon and Grant-Stuart making several attempts to catch the lead group. But the rapid pace of the leading four up Friar’s Hill was too much for the chasers who constantly got tailed off.
The cycling fraternity was amazed by the ability and talent of Grant-Stuart, who was one of the best riders of the day, and the fact that he did so one-handed. Grant-Stuart is an amputee with the loss of his right hand above the elbow, yet he is an outstanding rider who actually won the 2011 John T Memorial race in Anguilla.

Meanwhile, Walton Francis of Rattlers Club was the best in the B-Class, winning the 10-lap race in a time of 1:51.16. Tesheed Gordon, another Rattler, was 2nd in a time of 1:51.28. Ashley Rhodes who was 3rd in a time of 2:00.50, and Mervin Gore and St Claire Williams were 4th and 5th, respectively.
De Nobrega was the best junior of the day, out-sprinting his teammate, Jeffery, to win the eight-lap race in a time of 1:25.55. Jeffery placed 2nd in a time of 1:25.55.339 to beat the Antiguan juniors Tristan Matthew and Jaleel Cannonier who were 4th and 5th. The juniors will meet again in the Dominican Republic when they face off at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in August.
Lindsay Duffy won the four-lap female race in a time of 53:59 ahead of Kevinia Francis of Road Runners Cycling Club who was 2nd in a time of 56:15. Wendy Tittle placed 3rd in a time of 1:01.18.
Joel Phillip continues to dominate the Cadet Class; he won the six-lap event in a time of 1:11.26 ahead of Nigel Fabian who was 2nd in a time of 1:14.22.
Best of the Sports, Class Conroy Thomas, won the four-lap race in time of 51:00. Dexter Simmons was 2nd in a time of 52:35. Both riders are showing vast improvement and are awarded promotion to B-Class when the season resumes on 11th August.
The Billy’s Food Mart Friars Hill Challenge is sponsored by Food Brokerage Services and their products Tempo Water and Busti Fruit Drink. It marked the end of the first half of the 2012 season, which breaks in respect the Carnival season.
