Junior Tennis Players Hunt for Championship Titles

LR-Justice Christopher and Cordell WilliamsAntigua St. John’s – This week, a number of young tennis players are vying for championship titles on different levels and venues in the Caribbean.

An Under-12 team comprising Cordell Williams Jr. and Justice Christopher is representing Antigua and Barbuda for its first outing at the 2nd Annual Wilson Cup in Salina, Puerto Rico.

The tournament, which started yesterday (Monday), has attracted teams from South America, Central America, and the Caribbean, all of which are all battling for the coveted Wilson Cup.

The team is jointly sponsored by Caribbean Union Bank and Wilson, and is managed by Mrs. Erica Williams.

Meanwhile, U14 player D’Jeri Raymond had another successful run in her second match on Sunday during the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Tournament in Jamaica. Raymond defeated Jamaican Shaeda Nickle 6-3, 7-5 to move on to the next round both in singles and doubles.

The low turnout in the Girls U14 competition has caused the tournament officials to change the format of the competition and Raymond will play a total of four singles competitions to earn a position in the girls’ finals.

The Under 18 main draw competition commenced Monday, where Jody Maginley and Carib Seas-sponsored Kyle Joseph started their first round competition, they did not fare well today in the first round of this competition.

Results:

Singles
Christian Cargill (BAH) def Jody Maginley (ANT) 6-2, 6-1
Paredes A. Alfonzo (VEH) def Kyle Joseph (ANT) 6-2 6-1

Though both players are out of the singles competition there is hope yet as they look forward to the doubles competition which commences today 17th July.  Kyle Joseph has teamed up with Bahamian Phillip Major while Jody Maginley teamed up with American Daniel Shebshayevich.

Antigua's D'Jeri Raymond had a rest day yesterday, but is expected to play today in her third singles match and doubles finals after receiving a BYE to the doubles finals as the #1 seed with her doubles partner Shaeda Nickle (JAM)

The Antigua and Barbuda Tennis Association said in a release. “We thank the people who have helped them financially, because without them none of this would (have been) possible. The Wilson Cup team was sponsored by Caribbean Union Bank who helped with preparation and all travel expenses, and Wilson and their agent Heritage Sports (provided) apparel for (the) duration of the tournament.

“The ITF Jamaica team would like to thank their families for their support. Support also came on board for Kyle Joseph by way of Caribseas who came on board to make this opportunity possible,” the association concluded with hopes that the juniors will endeavour to do their best during the tournament.
