ABACA Names Caribbean Cycling Championships Team

ABACA Names Caribbean Cycling Championships TeamAntigua St. John’s - The Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association (ABACA) has identified a 12-member team that will commence training to represent the country at the 2012 Caribbean Cycling Championships to be held here from October 20 – 21st.

As the host country, Antigua and Barbuda is allowed to field two teams of five riders per Male team, and three riders per Female team, an option for which the other English speaking Caribbean countries are not eligible.

“The Association (is) confident to name the first team of five riders and select seven riders to fill the second team where we will chose the second five persons,” the cycling association stated in a release.

The first team consists of Jyme Bridges, Robert Marsh, Marvin Spencer, Andre Simon and Omari King, while the second team is made up of seven riders, two of whom are reserved to train in case of any last minute withdrawals. They are Clint Henry, Walton Francis, Ashley Rhoades, Ken Jackson, Dale Richardson, Brian Lyn, and Neil Lloyd.

The Female team consists of two riders -- the 2011 Caribbean Female Time trial Champion, Tamiko Butler will fly the nation’s flag along with Kevinia Francis.

“Recently, questions have surfaced in the media regarding the inclusion of Godfrey Pollydore on the team. The Association will be more than happy to include the region’s most successful sprint finisher; however, the governing body of the Championships, Caribbean Cycling Federation is very strict on the representation according to Passport and UCI Licence,” the ABACA statement said. “This will also affect our third female representative, Lindsay Duffy.”

The Association also selected an athlete representative on the board of the Local Organizing Committee and Team Manager of the entire squad in the person of Mervin Gore.

It also pointed out that its selection of the Coach to head squad was by virtue of the most wins based on Club points and this qualified Barry Gordon of Rattlers Cycling Club. He will be assisted by Ira Fabian who is the second best coach according to his club’s ranking, with Team Terminix being second.

The team is expected to start training together on Sunday. They will work on team tactics and improve their performance and hopefully arrive as the island’s trump card to propel to the top when the extremely high performance event is staged in Antigua in October, ABACA said.
