Antigua St. John’s – Victory came yesterday, July 4, for Team Antigua as Under 14 tennis player D'Jeri Raymond successfully took both the Singles and Doubles titles at the TIHTA Aruba Tournament..

It was another scorchingly hot day of play that brought mixed results for the remaining Antiguan players.
 
Jody Maginley and his doubles partner Kenta Kurita (Japan) who booked their quarterfinal spot on Day 2 of the TIHTA Aruba tournament were ousted by the #4 seeded doubles team of Farzin Danny Amiri (USA) and Rogelio Siller (MEX) 6-4, 6-3.
 
But in the girls singles finals, Raymond defeated the #2 seed Ashley Poulina (ARU) in three sets 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1.

The doubles competition reaped similar rewards for #1 seeded doubles team Raymond and her partner Gina Van Der Veen (ARU), who defeated Ashley Poulina (ARU) and Zina Riguard (Curacao) in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.

The showing made by all the Antiguan competitors in this tournament was commendable, and as they continue to move from tournament to tournament, the Antigua & Barbuda Tennis Association (ABTA) encouraged them to continue to give their training 110 per cent, for only through hard work can they achieve greatness.
 
These young athletes will move on to compete in the International Tennis Federation’s Jamaica tournament which commences on July 14th, 2012.
 
“The ABTA thanks Alicia Williams who accompanied the Antiguan-based players, offering the much needed support for practice sessions and overall management of our juniors. We also thank all the family and friends who supported these juniors in their endeavour to compete in this tournament,” the ABTA said in a release.
