Still the Chosen One

The big raceAntigua St John's - The Chosen One, from Chief Rocker Stables, demonstrated that it is still the horse to beat in the big race.

Yesterday, Jeff Jacobs came from a couple of lengths back to lead The Chosen One to victory over Jack Idle in the feature race of the day.

With Sly J, the "Chief Rocker", cheering in the crowd, The Chosen One ran well and Jacobs used his experience to take down Damarnie Tonge on Jack Idle from the Lyons Estate Stables.

Tonge had ridden Tempo to victory in the first race of the day, a three-furlong encounter, but against Jacobs and The Chosen One, Tonge was no match.

The Chosen One looked in fine form, but early on it looked like Jack Idle was going to take the race.

On the second go 'round of the eight-furlong race, The Chosen One pulled a new gear and passed Jack Idle on the east bend before turning loose on the home stretch.

It was a very exciting encounter, and certainly the fans who came out to the Whit Monday event got a treat.

“This is what horse racing is all about,” said head of the Antigua Turf Club Neil Cochrane. “The fans want to see exciting racing, and I thought they got what they came for. We hope to continue to promote horse racing and to continue the work. We have started to make the races enjoyable for all our fans."

Jacobs had one other win on the day when he rode He’s Alive, also from Chief Rocker Stables, to victory past Jah Thunder and Countess Liamsborg over four furlongs.

That was the second race of the day.

Of his exploits, the day clearly belonged to Claire Wilkins, with three wins and a second place finish in six races.

Wilkins opened the day with a second place to Tonge on Talk As You Like before claiming his first win on board Bling.

In that race, Wilkins beat Hugo James on Missing Files from the Sound Stables, and Jacobs on Moon from Carbon Stables.

Wilkins then followed up with consecutive wins in races four and five.

He took God’s Grace ahead of Babosa and Timber King before racing past Lucinda Tight Tight Tight and Queen Ester over six furlongs.

Lucinda hails from the Lyon’s Estate Stables, while the Queen comes from the Chief Rocker Stables.

The much-talked-about Emanuel was outdone by a poor start and finished at the back of the pack when He’s Alive won the third race of the day.
