Time to Fish

The Antigua & Barbuda Sports Fishing Club launchAntigua St John's - The Antigua & Barbuda Sports Fishing Club launched its 2012 tournament at Cloggy’s in English Harbour on Saturday.

Hundreds of fishing enthusiasts were on hand for the affair, which marks the start of the nation’s premier land-based event.

“It’s not just about fishing,” said president of the Antigua & Barbuda Sports Fishing Club, Philip Shoul. “We are looking at extending the tourism season here in Antigua. As you are aware, after Sailing Week (concluded last week) the country is basically at a standstill as it pertains to tourism until the following season starts in November."

He added, “We have two days of fishing, but along with that, we have a number of events in English Harbour that are targeted at stimulating the economy and bringing people together in a safe and secure environment.”

The highlight of the launch was the raffle, with the main prize a trip to Jamaica compliments Caribbean Airways and Sandals.

The launch party also gives the club an opportunity to bring sponsors and participants together in a festive environment where they can interact with each other.

“A lot can grow from a launch like this,” Shoul said. “Over the years, we have seen an increase in participation and we are confident that many alliances have been formed along the way. The businesses are enthusiastic, the participants and supporters of sport fishing look forward to this launch and we have watched this event evolve into strong partnerships. And that’s one of our main goals, to stir economic activity using sports fishing as bait.”

This year, 45 boats have been targeted from Antigua & Barbuda and neighbouring islands, including the Unites States Virgin Islands and Guadeloupe.

“We expect to have a great tournament,” the president said. “We are extremely enthused with the registration thus far, and we look forward to two days of fishing in one of the best places for blue marlins.”

Besides the fishing, supporters can watch the weigh-in, when the boats come in with their catch, which will be on sale soon after.

“We never have enough fish to sell,” Shoul said. “People come to the tournament for different reasons. Some to watch, but many others come so that they can buy some fresh fish and we cater to all their needs.”

The tournament is in its 46th year. Shoul is of the view that the fishing club will continue to grow and improve.

This year’s event starts on May 25 with the skippers briefing before two days of fishing.
