Bridges Leads Rattlers Sweep

Bridges Leads Rattlers SweepAntigua St John's - The Rattlers Cycling Club, led by Jyme Bridges, swept the A class division in the Matthew Auto Parts 45-mile race across the island on Sunday.

Bridges sprinted home after a grueling ride in a time of 2:03:30.633, ahead of teammates Clint Henry, second, and Omari King - third.

Henry nipped King at the line, and they finished in a time of 2:03:31.046 and 2:03:31.177, in that order.

Along with the top three spots in the A-class, Rattlers also grabbed first place in the B class.

Weldon Francis beat Asley Rhodes of team Savoy, and Team Terminix’s  Tameko Buttler, second and third, respectively.

In the female category, Lindsay Duffy of Rebel Racing finished in a time of 2:01:13 - 12 minutes ahead of Kevinia Francis of the Road Runners Cycling Club.

Team Terminix dominated the juniors' division to take the top two spots, with Jaleel Cannonier leading the way ahead of Jermane James, and Tasheed Gordon of Rattlers claiming the third position.

Cannonier’s time was 1:41:28, one minute better than James and Gordon.

The two cadets on show, Joel Phillip and Nigel Fabian, of Team Terminix, finished in that order.

While all the categories were keenly contested, it was the A class that drew the most attention with Bridges and Robert Marsh continuing their rivalry.

In the previous event, the Time Trial, Marsh took the top spot. But this time around it was Bridges who, along with his teammates, stole the show.

“This was actually a team effort,” Bridges told CARIBARENA.COM minutes after winning the race.

“As a matter of fact,” he said, “we just about knew how this race was going to finish, because for the past couple of weeks, we practiced on a number of strategies, including a sprint finish.”

King, sponsored by Off the Rack Fashions, and Work Force Equipment Tool Rentals, got away from the pack with Dale Richardson on his back wheel.

The two led from Bolans to Willikies before the bunch caught them on the way back at Pares Village.

“Omarie did just what we planned, and the team rode an almost perfect race despite the fact we had a little trouble because of the rain and the place was a bit slippery,” Bridges said.

Eddy Matthew of Matthew Auto Parts presented the winners with their prize monies.

An ardent fan of the sport, Matthew was encouraged by the performances of the riders, especially the younger cadets.

He continues to support the sport, not just by sponsorship, but is present at each race handing out water and other refreshments for the riders.
