Villa stuns SAP in Premier League

Villa vs. SAPThe Villa Lions FC pulled off a shocker in the Digicel/Hadeed Motors and Observer Group Premier Division football competition on Sunday when they inflicted a 4-1 trouncing on defending champions Cool & Smooth SAP.

Playing in the feature match of a double-header at the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG), Villa got the better of play against a sluggish looking SAP team, who seemed just a shadow of what they were against former champs BASSA last Sunday.

Villa opened the scoring in minute 11, when defender Mervyn Higgins eased a comfortable header over the goal-line from just outside the six-yard box after the ball fell to him from a tame attempted clearance by the SAP custodian, Teon Nathaniel.

The defending champions found an equalizer, and what would turn out to be their lone strike of the game when striker Okeem “Soda” Challenger side-footed his shot into the far eastern end of the net after picking up the ball at an angle just inside the area. Challenger’s goal came in the 27th minute at the northern end of the field.

Villa however came out of the dressing room looking like a brand new team, and even having lost defender Carim Smith in the 30th minute after he received two yellow cards, dominated the contest in both attack and defense.

Striker Omega Jeffery restored his team’s one goal advantage just 10 minutes after the restart, when he used his wits to chip a ball over the head of the back-pedaling Nathaniel and into the back of the net.

Villa continued to pressure the SAP defense and made another breakthrough in the 72nd minute when striker Kerry “Arab” Skepple ran onto a loose ball just on the goal-line before tapping it into the back of the net. The ball had come loose from the grasp of Nathaniel, who had to dive to his left to block an initial shot.

Winger Kenny Morgan sealed the door shut on SAP when he broke free in minute 77 to lift his attempt into the roof of the net before running to the Jamaican stand to celebrate his conversion.

Two other players, including Nathaniel, were red-carded during the contest. The custodian was asked to leave the field in minute 90 after he handled the ball outside the area to deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, while substitute Orlando “Baby” Peters of SAP was sent on in minute 69 after he reportedly used foul and abusive language.
