Hoppers advanced to the second round of the CONCACAF Champions League with a win at the Antigua Recreation Grounds on Sunday by defeating Seville FC of Puerto Rico with a 5-3 victory in the Caribbean Football Union’s qualifying round.
The Hoppers needed a win at home to get into the second round of the qualifying matches after a 3-3 tie in Puerto Rico.
Tamarley “Ziggy” Thomas scored the first goal in the first 15 minutes of play and the Hoppers never looked back. Its defence played superbly and the visiting team hardly got opportunities to make a goal.
“I thought that my defence played superbly,” Coach Vaughn “Pop-T” James said after the game. “I hope that the national coaches were watching because Terry Roberts had a very good game. He has had some good seasons and it’s time for him to make it to the national team.”
James also commended defender, Troy “Bashi” Buckley, for his good work in the back. After Thomas gave the home team the lead going into the break, Kelly Frederick sealed the deal in the sixty-third minute. Frederick got an excellent pass from midfielder, Lawson Robinson, which left him one on one with the Seville keeper. As expected, Frederick took that home in fine style.
Seville made a number of attacks but the Hoppers defence completed the ‘blank’ job.
So, it’s on to the second round against the winner of Guyana and Haiti.
