Antigua St. John's - The top eight football teams in the region will battle here in Antigua for championship honors in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup from December 7th to 14th.
The eight teams are divided into 2 groups consisting of 4 teams each. In Group 1 will be Antigua & Barbuda, Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti, while Group 2 consists of Jamaica, French Guyana, Martinique and Cuba.
The Groups will play on alternative days; Group 1 will play at the Antigua Recreation Grounds, while Group 2 will play at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
Antigua & Barbuda will take on Dominican Republic in their opening match, while Trinidad & Tobago will open with Haiti. Jamaica is the defending Champion in this competition.
The two top teams in each zone will qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the USA next year alongside CONCACAF powerhouse Mexico and the USA.
Workmen are busy preparing to erect new lights at the ARG in time for matches since it is a requirement for any host venue to have more than one lighted venue. The lights at the ARG have become a contentious issue year after year in the local season, thus forcing the ABFA to install new lighting.
President of the Caribbean Football Union Gordon ‘Banks’ Derrick and the ABFA President Everton ‘Batow’ Gonsalves are both confident that the Antigua & Barbuda national football team will make it to the Gold Cup next year. They are calling on the general public to come out and support the Benna Boys just as they did in the recent FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches on the Road to Rio.
