US Defeat Antigua 2-1

US Defeat Antigua 2-1Antigua St. John's - Antigua & Barbuda narrowly conceded victory to the United States of America in their final match in the World Cup Football qualifiers at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds.

Eddie Johnson was the lone USA men’s player to score both goals and he hasn't been able to hold down a regular place in the United States national team.

The USA drew first blood with Johnson netting his first goal after 20 minutes of play; but the home team quickly leveled the game in the 25th minute.

The winning goal did not come until the 90th minute, as USA battled in unusually windy conditions against a stubborn Antigua & Barbuda side.

The result moves the USA to top of their qualifying group three points clear of Guatemala and Jamaica, who played later on Friday night with one game to play.

In the 25th minute of play Antigua’s striker Peter Byers drove into the area on the right and squared the ball to Dexter Blackstock inside the six-yard box for a simple finish. This reaffirmed some much-needed confidence in the home side, as they battled relentlessly throughout the remainder of the match.

And despite dominating possession, the U.S. created few chances after the break and Antigua nearly went in front in the final 10 minutes, as Byers curled a shot just wide of the right post.

Antigua goalkeeper Molvin James produced a good save on Michael Bradley's header to keep the match leveled. But he couldn't prevent Johnson from adding to his tally in the 90th minute as substitute Alan Gordon provided the early cross allowing the Americans to avoid an embarrassing draw.

Dave, since you mentioned Cricket, in the 1970's thru the 1990, when West Indies 'DOMININATED WORLD CRICKET, EVERY PLAYER FROM Sir Vivian "the Master Blaster" Richards were TECHNICALLY TAUGHT THROUGH THE COUNTY CRICKET IN ENGLAND.s.
Say dat nutten go so...As talented as Sir Viv is without that, he probably would only be remembered for his "coconut bow bat" instead of his SS,.
Several of the National players are been taught today in many foreign Countries. WE BIG, BUY WE NO LARGE YET, we're still students who have to learn from the Masters, which requires HUMILITY, PATIENCE, RESPECT...
Any of today's great batsmen in cricket always mention Sir Viv, Sir Garfield, Brian etc as to their style Andy, Curtley, Holding, Garner are always mentioned as bowlers that are still imitated.

I listened to the match on Observer Radio from a live feed from London at around midnight. So I was really disapointed that the game against the USA was lost with virtually the last kick of the match.

However, all is not lost for the benna boyzs, if the team can find a decent right back (because that's where the majority of goals have come from during this world cup campaign) that can stay focus for the full 90 odd minutes, then the future looks bright.

The USA took the points, but the benna boyzs took the plaudits and grew as a team!

Good Game

#9 skyewill » 2012-10-13 13:58

It was a good game both teams played well. One must win and one must loose. If this was High School I would say, well, at lease we had some fun. And if not for the fact that all sports are won by people who are faster, stronger and lots of disipline I may have agreed with Rastaman and dave I would take the side of young analysis. Como, I understand. JP, I'm mixed on your comment because I still believe although they played a great and I can see them beating the US base on this last performance, they would still have to have the will amd that would mean upping their game. There is always nxt time.

Your observation's and opinion's are most welcome and admired. Food for thought
...Peter was playing, played a great game (true dat)
...The game was into injury time ( true dat)
... Because Peter was having such a fabulous game, the Americans were drawn to him like steel dust to a magnet. The substitution was a classical technical move at the end of close games. By taking your best player out, it does several things.
A...the your opponents focus has to change instantaneous, allowing that split second as they mentally adjust.
B...your other players have to make use of this adjustment and capitalize on the opponents disarray.
C...a fresh pair of legs more often than not will score at this time or be involved in a scoring play.
A CLASSICAL BRAZILIAN TECHNICAL MOVE.

come on, when, oh when

#7 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-10-13 13:34

Come on peeps, forget the negative name calling, bashing this, bashing that, YES, we all know that critical analysis is necessary for growth to a stronger, more positive place, but the writing is on the wall. WE HAVE RAW NATURAL TALENT the key ingredient to produce anything of quality.
We did not invent this sport, just like most sports, Our tenacious, hardworking, strong willed character, allows us to adapt to ANYTHING and be a 'MASTER BLASTER' at it.
Playing teams like the US, is like a 10 year old prodigy going off to do a Phd program at Yale, Harvard or MIT.
There are many technical aspects of the game that Our Local Coaches, managers, and staff MUST acquire outside of the Nation.
Get Real, WE BIG, BUT WE NO LARGE YET.....

Biased reporting, but that's to be expected. No mention of the heavy rain, only 'windy' conditions. Byers shot was well wide of the goal, but the USA hit the post with the goalkeeper totally off his mark, and a later USA shot was also just wide of the post. Having said all that this was the best performance I have seen by an Antigua team, the coach had finally made these boys realise that football is a team sport. Usually the antigua strikers want to get all the glory alone, in doing so they have not won any of their
previous games in this tournament. If they had played this well before then
I believe we would be going further.

'Dave', only reason you think the coach should go is because he's a white man, Curtis should be applauded for bringing a bunch of dunces this far. He has turned them into football players, not a bunch of dimwits kicking a ball around for fun. Give the man his due, he's earnt it, stop being so ignorant.

Bigger Picture!

#4 young analyst » 2012-10-13 10:06

My fellow Wadadlians look at the bigger picture we played one of the top teams in the world and they had to score in the 90th minute in order to pull off the victory. As i watched from a live stream i was so extremely proud of my country, however at the end of the game there were some post match comments such made me very upset. For one the reporters for some reason cant get the name of the venue correct, secondly which i think was rather interesting is when they said it was a cricket field used to play football on. Now the later got me hard, can you imagine in 2012 that there is no home for football there are two stadiums (both cricket stadiums) and no cricket plays in one and the other a few games per year. As we can see there is raw talent here in Antigua aka Wadadli but we need the governors of the country to step up, the future is here. Well done Benna Boys
