Antigua St. John’s - Empire Football Club was the recipient of football equipment compliments Head Soccer Coach at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, Dan Birkey, and his Men’s Soccer Team.
Head of Empire’s Technical Committee and former coach/player Michael Scotland accepted the donation of 13 footballs, training vests and discs from Lennie Quashie, a graduate and student athlete (Soccer) Hall of Fame Inductee of Concordia University.
Scotland thanked Coach Birkey and the Concordia University Men’s Soccer Team for their assistance and said that although the equipment was intended for the senior men’s team, they will now be utilised by the U13 and U17 teams.
He said that the club’s sponsor, Cool & Smooth, has provided the senior team with some equipment as part of its 2012-13 sponsorship agreement.
Quashie, who is also Empire FC’s General Secretary, said the equipment was requested at short notice after the club found itself short on footballs at the start of training. Coach Birkey responded favourably to the request and included the other equipment.
He added that the donation is the first step in what he hopes would be a fruitful and long-standing relationship between Concordia University Men’s Soccer Team and Empire Football Club.
Meanwhile, Coach Birkey, who is in his 25th year with the Cavaliers, said his hope is that “the equipment will be used as tools to further the growth and development of character and discipline through football in the lives of young people and future leaders on the island of Antigua."
Concordia is a private, Christian, Liberal Arts University open to students of any faith. Nestled in the Pacific Northwest, Concordia University is committed to the dual purpose of preparing students for life and for a living.
