PMS are U-15 Champs

PMS are U-15 ChampsAntigua St John's - Princess Margaret School (PMS) took the Anjo Insurance U-15 inter-schools championship with a five-wicket win over All Saints Secondary on Friday.

Xavier Marshall hit a game high 34 to lead PMS to victory with 104 for five, after All Saints batted first and scored 103 in their allotted 25 overs.

Some good bowling by Javy Benjamin and Elroy Francis Jr. with two wickets each restricted the top team in the competition from amassing a huge total.

Benjamin had 19 runs struck from his five overs, while Francis gave up 25 from his five.

Karima Gore top-scored for All Saints, with 23. Most of the runs came off wide deliveries of which there were 52, to be exact.

In PM’s reply they reached their target with five balls left in the game, much to the pleasure of Principal Colin Greene - who was in attendance to witness the first championship in cricket since he took over.

“We have won all the other tournaments and competitions,” Greene said.

“This has always eluded us, and I told coach (Alphonso “Blacks” Jarvis) that he owes me one: and as you see he has delivered.”

For his part the coach was simply happy his team was able to pull off the win and join with the other teams that have won inter-schools titles for PMS.

“I’m just happy for the guys.

“They worked very hard and they believed they could win,” Jarvis said.

Losing coach Pernell “Roxie” Joseph said that these tournaments are not just about who wins or loses.

“Sure we would like to win, but it’s more about development; and we want to see that the guys play good cricket and we can see improvement in their game.

“Once we can achieve that, then we all win,” said Joseph, whose team was on its way to three-peat in this competition - until they ran into PMS at the Rising Sun Grounds.

All Saints came into the post season as the top team, beating Clare Hall Secondary in the semis.

PMS’ path to the finals was through St. Joseph’s Academy.

Now, Greene’s boys are champions of cricket.
