Toyota Luring Buyers Back

Toyota floor mat. photo: cache.gawker.comToyota is reporting success in its bid to woo customers, particularly repeat customers, in the wake of a massive recall and ongoing reports of malfunctions.

A senior Toyota executive in the US, Don Esmond, said the company has done its penance, and is intent on putting the episode behind it.

Over 8.5 million vehicles, over 6 million in the US, have been recalled worldwide following horror stories of brake and accelerator problems. So far, 52 deaths have been cited.

Edmonds said the sales figures for March had spiked by around 50 percent. The new deals include two years of free maintenance for repeat customers, along with zero percent financing on some of the recalled models.

A dealership owner in Florida who spoke to online news sources reported brisk sales among the Camry and Prius, despite the recalls.

"These are the best incentives we've seen in a long time," he said. "We are basically telling customers, Toyota sales will be coming back and they're going to pull these incentives. So people see a sense of urgency."

Toyota's incentives have forced over manufacturers to offer competitive deals as well.
