In spite of all of our best efforts to be prepared and equipped with all that we think we may need on the road in emergency situations, there are occasions when things happen that we have no control over, like getting a flat tyre.
When and if you do get a flat, your best tool is knowing how to change it. That knowledge was one of the first things my father taught me before I even got behind the wheel of a car to learn to drive. He told me that the first crucial thing was to familiarize myself with the vehicle and all its parts. Yes, I had to read the manual.
In addition, he told me to always make sure that my spare tyre was is good condition, and that there was actually a spare tyre, a jack, and a lug wrench stored in their place, unobstructed.
Ladies, if you are on the road alone, cell phone signal is bad, or there is no knight in shining armour to come to your aid, once you do the following, you will be fine:
• When you do get a flat, pull off the road onto a level area that is free from the flow of traffic, park the vehicle, and turn on your hazard lights.
• Unlock your trunk and take out the spare tyre, the jack, the lug wrench, and wheel chocks you will need to remove and replace the flat tyre.
• Take off the hubcap and loosen the lug nuts, remembering to skip every other one until you have gone completely around the wheel.
• Having read your vehicle manual, you will know exactly where to place the jack. Once the jack is placed in the right spot, raise the car enough to get off the flat and have enough room to put on the spare tyre.
• Remove the flat tyre and place it in your trunk.
• Check to make sure that the air valve is facing outward, and then put on the spare tyre.
