Frustrated Terror-Stricken Driver

A large truck hauling I was about to move off as the traffic light turned green, but was forced to pump my brakes as a large truck hauling a flatbed suddenly rushed across my path from the opposite direction.

After regaining my composure, I started to move off again when another truck followed in close formation, and I was forced to stop again. I said a little prayer expressing my gratitude to the Heavenly Father that my brakes actually worked and I had been spared from what could have been a tragic accident.

Later that day, just after sunset, I was the second person in the center lane at the traffic lights in front of the YMCA.

Although we had the green light and were obviously hoping to make a right turn onto Friars Hill Road towards the Lions Den, the terrified woman in front of me immediately swerved and went straight ahead as an 18-wheeler came blowing its horn and swinging around the corner. I had to swing over into the lane to my left to avoid being in the direct path of this monstrous truck. By this time, the entire cue of vehicles behind me followed suit when they realized what was taking place.

I have had this experience too many time to mention, and I know a lot of other road-users who are completely frustrated with having to deal with this sort of wanton disregard and recklessness by these rig drivers. More often than not, they are driving above the speed limit, and when they do blow their horns, they do not wait and give other drivers enough time to get out of the way.  On other occasions, I have had to either mount the sidewalk to get out of their way or get off the road completely in fear of being crushed.

I know that it is the Christmas season and everybody is rushing to have their containers cleared from the port and delivered in a rush, but are we going to wait until a traffic accident happens?  As far as I am aware, heavy duty vehicles should not be on the road after sunset, much less to be speeding. Laws just seem to be on the books for style and fashion in this country. Do traffic police officers only work in the daytime? Do people only drive in the daytime? Who is making sure that our roads are safe day and night?

Incidents like these remind me why I dislike driving in Antigua, and why I avoid driving at night.

You hardly ever see police officers, unless there is a serious accident. Some drivers use the cover of darkness to test their engines, and seemingly fulfill some death wish. If only to make the rest of us feel safe, something has to be done about those container-pulling trucks that speed on the roads and endanger other people's lives.

All these people that are commenting just dont seem to understand between a car and a truck pulling a trailer. 1st of all when you hear the horn of the a truck what are u soppose to do as a driver!! is it to continue driving or slow down or give way what is it, cus i kno when u hear and ambulance or a fire truck you act accordingly, the trucks have to take wider tunrs than a car to turn a corner, that light hasnt been working for a while and the trucks have to end up blowing their horns so that traffic ahead will know that they are coming because if you wait to late to go wide what will take place is going to be either a traffic jam where no one will be able to pass or an accident. We live in Antigua our roads have two lanes not four like in America or England or any other places so what you drivers need to do is to get with the program

Even if htey have to make an usual turn (like not going around the roundabout) they jsut blwo the horn and keep going. they dont give people ample time to get out of the way. they dont care, they are bigger and can do damage so everybody else must move out the way. i am really sick of it.

I have been in my car at the lights of government house going west to lions on many occasions, and have seen trucks go around the round about on the right hand side....many... .many... times, police have been on the road and have seen this, and they don"t do any thing...and you know why!
The way the road is made,a flat bed can't go around that bend by the round about in front of govenment house on the left hand side!!!!( Flat Beds should be banned by LAW ,OR redo the road !!!!)

anything goes

Traffic lights working or not, it seems as if anything goes in Antigua, and everybody just do what ever they want. I have been one of those people who end up swearing because one of those said big trucks almost run me and my family of the road. The fact of the matter is that the truk driver dont give a damn about anybody else using the road and because they knwo you dont want to get hit or killed they drive any how. Plus they are not getting charged for reckless driving unless some body get killed.

I agree with the write and dont think it has anything to do with lights, even when the lights are working those big truck drivers do the same thing, they blow horn and floor it, and they always seem to be in a big hurry. i just move aside when they coming because they dont give you enough time to move.
