The newly-installed Archbishop of the Province of the West Indies, John Holder, has called on the Christian community to ensure it does not lose sight of reality and to be keenly aware of the challenges facing the region.
“We must allow our theology to speak to the realities and the experiences of the Caribbean,” said Holder in delivering the sermon during his Service of Recognition at the St. Michael’s Cathedral on Thursday night.
“As we minister, we need to do so with a good working knowledge of the social, religious, economic and political dynamics that shape the lives of the people.
“We need a theology that engages with the Caribbean experience for we strongly believe that God can continue to speak to us through these experiences in this region. It is with this conviction that we are able to truly grapple with challenges that we may face each day,” he added.
Addressing a large congregation that included other Bishops from across the Province, he further challenged the church to engage with its adversaries.
“We need to strengthen our willingness to engage with those who may hold positions contrary to ours,” he said.
But he warned that “the adversarial approach to life that we see all around us in other areas of life and with which we are all familiar is one that we cannot afford to embrace in the church,” adding that “we dare not confuse being different with being wrong”.
