Dear Editor, I am now convinced that not many persons living in the Seatons/Glanville and Willikies communities truly understand the gravity of a situation that has been allowed to develop right on their doorsteps.
I am referring to a steel cargo ship belonging to a resident of this area, who I understand is now recently deceased. It was brought into Seatons harbour some years ago, and has never left since.
This ship has never carried any cargo while here, and has been tied to an island in the bay and allowed to swing in the wind, coming to rest on the shallow sea floor on either side of it. We can see its detiorating condition worsen as time goes by.
Many people, both individually and collectively, have made numerous attempts to have something done about it, but all to no avail.
It’s only a matter of time, and it could very well happen this year, that a storm or hurricane impacts our island and no doubt about it, this ship will break its meager restraining ropes, and with the 6ft increase in the height of the tides on top of large breaking waves, will come to rest on shore on top of our prestine mangroves or in front of the village or peoples’ homes. There it can never be towed away, because there is no vessel here capabable of doing so and also because the government could never afford the costs.
In my opinion, the view of the north coast islands from Seatons village is second only in natural beauty to the view from Shirley Heights of English Harbour/Falmouth. Do we really want it totally desecreated by such a deplorable sight and remaining there into eternity?
I say something should and must be done about it, while it is still within our capabilities to do so. I understand that a former member of the previous government may have some say in what happens to this ship, and so I am calling for his kind intervention in this matter. After all, I know he was a keen fisherman who loves his coastline where he lives, and would not like to see it eternally tarnished.

Antigua have a lot of other top priorities such as high unemployement, increase in crime, poor customer service, poor health care, where pt's are told they do not have, certain medication in the island, Start writing and action plan and present it your current goverment.Use your talents wisely to help bring about change for others, not only what benifits you. After all every dog will have its day

RE: Environmental Disaster in the Making
Two possible solutions
1) Remove hazardous materials and dispose of appropriatly, then tow out to a suitable place to create a dive site.
2) Remove hazardous materials and dispose of properly and sell for scrap, .15c per lb proceeds go to Boys training school not govt agency after cost have been covered!!

Bigger Question
Your article is timely as we enter another hurricane season.
This abandoned vessel has been ignored by the authorities for too many years and it is indeed time that it be removed to protect the coastal residents and our environment. The threat is clearly imminent. Note that one of the largest remaining mangrove forests and natural fish hatcheries are in this bay. Who should care?
Whether our elected officials act in a responsible manner for the nation or continue to travel the world making speeches for self aggrandizement, commercial whaling and political gain may be the bigger question.

Who is responsible?
Why the government don't set a deadline for removal then put a for sale (by auction) on it if its not remove by that time. The money can got to the environment dept.
If this boat get logged in the mangrove it will be bad for the area and the fish could be feeding off of the decaying metal for 100 years.

If this has anything to do with you, take some of that money that you have stolen from the people of Antigua when your party was in power and hire one of the Tugs that brings sand to Antigua from Barbuda and pull that scrap iron out to sea,and maybe the people of your area will put in a vote for you next time around !!!
