Environmental Disaster in the Making

Wave-runnerDear Editor, I am now convinced that not many persons living in the Seatons/Glanville and Willikies communities truly understand the gravity of a situation that has been allowed to develop right on their doorsteps.

I am referring to a steel cargo ship belonging to a resident of this area, who I understand is now recently deceased. It was brought into Seatons harbour some years ago, and has never left since.

This ship has never carried any cargo while here, and has been tied to an island in the bay and allowed to swing in the wind, coming to rest on the shallow sea floor on either side of it. We can see its detiorating condition worsen as time goes by.

Many people, both individually and collectively, have made numerous attempts to have something done about it, but all to no avail. Wave-runner

It’s only a matter of time, and it could very well happen this year, that a storm or hurricane impacts our island and no doubt about it, this ship will break its meager restraining ropes, and with the 6ft increase in the height of the tides on top of large breaking waves, will come to rest on shore on top of our prestine mangroves or in front of the village or peoples’ homes. There it can never be towed away, because there is no vessel here capabable of doing so and also because the government could never afford the costs.

In my opinion, the view of the north coast islands from Seatons village is second only in natural beauty to the view from Shirley Heights of English Harbour/Falmouth. Do we really want it totally desecreated by such a deplorable sight and remaining there into eternity?

I say something should and must be done about it, while it is still within our capabilities to do so. I understand that a former member of the previous government may have some say in what happens to this ship, and so I am calling for his kind intervention in this matter. After all, I know he was a keen fisherman who loves his coastline where he lives, and would not like to see it eternally tarnished.

I also know that many people would contribute to have this ship towed out to sea and scuttled into the depths, after all the necessary preparations are made to remove all the relevant oils/fuel etc.

There are enough ships and fishing vessels lying on beaches and shallows around our beautiful island from previous storms. Can we really afford to have this environmental disaster on our hands?

I saw this ship while vacationing in Antigua last year. I hope they do move it soon as it is an environmental and navigational hazard.

Environmental disaster

#22 jackie » 2011-07-29 18:24

After reading your opinion, I find your sudden interest and concern about this community quite perplexing.Mr Hall, why is it you did not voice your concern until you heard this man had passed away.As a concerned citizen of this community, what have you tried to do to help this man or this community.Again , here we go, people writing without collecting all the facts, this man followed all the rules and applications, yet all were held up or denied after the fact due to political retaliation. As i have said for years even the air you breathe in Antigua is tied to politics. "THE BUZZARDS WILL CIRCLE AND EAT THE CARCUS OF THE DEAD WHEN THE CANNOT DEFEND THEMSEVES''
Antigua have a lot of other top priorities such as high unemployement, increase in crime, poor customer service, poor health care, where pt's are told they do not have, certain medication in the island, Start writing and action plan and present it your current goverment.Use your talents wisely to help bring about change for others, not only what benifits you. After all every dog will have its day

what could have benifited us all

#21 SEATONITE » 2011-07-25 22:30

It is rather ironic to me that a big vessel like this has been bought in the great United States of America, sailed all the way through the Panama Canal and arrived here in Antigua in 2007 and cannot sail up to now. Can you imagine a boat like Wave Runner passing through the Panama Canal? It had to be sea worthy!!! The authorities in Antigua Failed to give this man a fair chance to apply his trade. He had his crew, letters of intent in various island and countries, from Guyana all the way up and even Europe. The projections were there, he could have made it happen. He spoke to all of them, from Baldwin to the small man in coast guard to no avail. Political Assasination by a vindective and corrupt government!!!!! ! R.I.P Neil Adams

#20 SEATONITE » 2011-07-25 22:02

First thing, there are two sides to every story. Now the native son had a vision, a vision to be inovative and resourceful, to help the community and build it. who would have benifited? The Community!!! so for all those self centered ** who can only sit behind their computers and write ** on this blog about "WAVE- RUNNER" so why did you not help this beloved community of yours by letting ideas contend rather than tearing down the man before he is laid to rest "PEACEFULLY." As for you Moody Stuart you need to remember your forefathers came and made us slave on our own land so i dont give a ** if you think you have the rights of a citizen to comment on this situation cause moody staurt what you are is a mercinary and you dont have the moral right to comment on this so keep your plantocratic comments to your self.

Correction to Let Saner & Wiser Heads Prevail and Take Action Pt1

#19 John French II » 2011-07-25 14:51

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. In a response to "Seatons", I incorrectly stated that "the Man is Dead and Buried". Dead yes. Buried no. I have been advised that he will be laid to rest this week. My Apologies and Condolences to his Family, Relatives and Friends. May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace and His Dream & Vision Live On.
With Deepest Respect.

Let Saner & Wiser Heads Prevail & Take Actions PT2

#18 John French II » 2011-07-24 22:59

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. All of our Shipping in the CSME is carried by Foreign Owned & Manned Vessels. Back in the 50's travel by both people and goods in the Leewards especially between Antigua & Montserrat was on a Montserratan owned and operated Vessel. There was very little travel between the British Carribbean Islands. Before and During the War and it was on Canadian Boats, referred to as the "Canadian Queens". With The West Indies Federation, Canada donated Ships to transport Humans and Goods between the Islands of The Federation. With the Death of the Federation that maritime transportation died. The void has never been filled by Caribbean People. The Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago is considering Operating a Fast Ferry Service. Other than that what we have are small foreign owned ferries between two ports. Nation Building & Independence, My Friends. May the Powers That Be Act Expeditiously to avoid coastal damage and not ineffectively as they did with one of our own poor Visionaries. Heaven Help The Nation Of Antigua & Barbuda - Redonda?

Let Saner & Wiser Heads Prevail & Take Actions PT1

#17 John French II » 2011-07-24 22:34

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. It clear that many have not nor care to understand that the owner of the cargo vessel is Dead. The matter must now be handled by the Responsible Government Agencies, the Bank(s) and the Executors. "Seatons" if you are from the Village, why be so callous - The Man is Dead & Buried. To Typical Antiguan, Only the Lords Engage in sending their hounds after the Foxes. We do not engage in the Noble Art of Bull Fighting. Forgive us if our history is replete with your cruelty to Humans. The Man had a Vision, which most wish to consign to a watery grave for the benefit of Divers. His Vision encompassed the CSME. The Vessel was bought in the Good ole USA. Traveled fom the US West Coast to Antigua & Barbuda under its own power. The US Coast Guard has stringent Rules for sailing in their waters. It was not meant to be engaged in illegal enterprises. Is that all you expect of US? His Vision was to transport Goods and in particular agricultural produce. Who does this in Caricom. Foreign owned Vessels. Hopefully, we all learn and the folks with jurisdiction will take action to avoid coastal marine damage.

Its Pretty amazing

#15 Citizen » 2011-07-24 20:11

This is so simple. It is the responsibility of the coast guard to insure that all vessels in Antiguan waters a duly registered, or have coast wise clearances. this boat clearly has neither, therefore, the coast guard requires to impound it until its safety requirements and registration can be determined and authenticated, and if nothing else, auction it off. or sink it to form a reef.

Sad to say, but nothing will be done to that vessel simply because the government cannot afford the salvage, towing and demolition cost. Therefore, it will be left to rot like all the other vessels before it and pollute the area for our future generations.

What assistance did the "Pickey head" person want Mr French ! Perhaps it was an unreasonable request, hence the inaction.

Two possible solutions
1) Remove hazardous materials and dispose of appropriatly, then tow out to a suitable place to create a dive site.
2) Remove hazardous materials and dispose of properly and sell for scrap, .15c per lb proceeds go to Boys training school not govt agency after cost have been covered!!

Bigger Question

#11 Buzzbomb » 2011-07-24 15:22

Thank you Mr. Hall.
Your article is timely as we enter another hurricane season.
This abandoned vessel has been ignored by the authorities for too many years and it is indeed time that it be removed to protect the coastal residents and our environment. The threat is clearly imminent. Note that one of the largest remaining mangrove forests and natural fish hatcheries are in this bay. Who should care?
Whether our elected officials act in a responsible manner for the nation or continue to travel the world making speeches for self aggrandizement, commercial whaling and political gain may be the bigger question.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Need I remind other "Pickey Heads" that Moody Stuart's Descebdants are gainfully plying their trade in this Departed Son of the Rock's backyard and Crusoe and his Former Man Friday utter not a Peep. How Ironic? Now he has been laid to rest with his dream. Crusoe points to the Vessel. The "Native Pickey Head" is forgotten and Unmourned. Where are the Blues & Reds? Enjoying the triumph of the Colonial Cl** and quaffing a gl** of mirth. Have Mercy Pon Us. This is a tale of two Peoples. Our Colonizing Cl** and "Pickey Head Natives" who are steadily losing the gains made by VC, The Hurst Brothers, Shepard, Myers, Lake, Uncle Luther George, Norris Walter, Uncle Norris Abbott, Robin Bascus and others of that mentality. Revist Susan Lowes "Rum & Coca Cola". Let Me State so that there is no question. I only write as a concerned citizen with no other interests. I too urge, the Responsible Government Agencies, The Bank(s) and The Executors to Act with All Speed Ahead. Time Is Of The Essence. Heaven Help The Nation Of Antigua & Barbuda - Redonda?

For Whom The Bell Tolls PT2

#9 John French II » 2011-07-24 14:43

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Here is what was written as a comment to Tenman 2011-07-16. "We must be forever Vigilant. Here is the Colonial Rag on "Still There". An Unlettered "Pickey Head" and Native Son OF The Rock Died. Not a Peep by Robinson Crusoe. Died from Exhaustion & Frustration of His Own Government and People. What was his Illness? He had a Vision to increase the tranfer of agricultural products throuhout the CSME just as Marcus with the Black Star Line. He wore his Red Colours Proudly. He was defianly Ouadadlian. He spent all he had to realize the Dream only to see it moored in Mercers Creek. He needed Management and Financial Help. His Neighbours of the First and Second estate railed against this upstart "Pickey Head"."
Respect.

#8 John French II » 2011-07-24 14:27

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. There is no quibble or disagreement with the Opinion Writer or any of the comments from the well intentioned bloggers. My concerns are with the actions or non actions of the ressponsible Government Agencies, the Bank and or Executors of the Estate. Some one must take the lead in the Proper Legal, Effective & Efficient Management and Disposition of the Problem(s) and QUICKLY. The issue has been floated as the environmental damage and degradation to the mangroove. Yes. Why not also educate of the potential damage to the Business of Moody Stuart's Descendants and the Property Damage to members of the First Estate who live along the shores of the bay and who offered no quarter to the "Pickey Head" now deceased owner. Intellectual dishonesty always brings about results that were not intended. "Pickey Heads", Here Is What I Wrote of This Unfortunate Marine & Shipping Saga.

I agree that this could be a disaster and need to be moved away.
Who is responsible?
Why the government don't set a deadline for removal then put a for sale (by auction) on it if its not remove by that time. The money can got to the environment dept.
If this boat get logged in the mangrove it will be bad for the area and the fish could be feeding off of the decaying metal for 100 years.

One more emba**ment to the nation

#6 only in Antigua » 2011-07-24 09:40

I first saw this discrase while on a tour to see the sting rays then again on another eco tour . Along with thousands of other visitors to our fragil tourist haven I was told that in Antigua if you have enough political clout you can do what ever you want and this is a symbol of just how foolish those favors can be. Think about bringing a cargo ship into a residential neighborhood., then tieing it up for years! It would be the same as some one parking an 18 wheel tractor trailer in your front yard. But never mind its only out enviornment, health , financial futhre that is at risk. Not our political favor system.
There is another one in the National park in Falmouth Harbour ...Woops!

Your letter is illustrative of a communities failures on numerous levels. The failure of the residents of the local community to appreciate the gravity of the problem and the need to bring pressure on the powers that be to address and solve this problem. I say solve because there is also a failure of the various regulatory system to have allowed this to be on going for so long. It is a failure of the local environmental advocates who have not invested enough to bring about awareness to the problems, so that the public can be informed of the long term implications. You have taken the first step at this juncture, and I hope others will follow.

Maybe it could loaded up with all the thieving politicians from both party's,and then towed out to sea and set adrift.I do think that that would be the best thing that could be done with that old ship......at least some good would be comming out of it !!!

Mr P Salad,

If this has anything to do with you, take some of that money that you have stolen from the people of Antigua when your party was in power and hire one of the Tugs that brings sand to Antigua from Barbuda and pull that scrap iron out to sea,and maybe the people of your area will put in a vote for you next time around !!!

Good observation, I have noticed that boat as I have noticed a wooden boat that was simularly bought into the harbour at English Harbour few years ago. To date the said boat in Englihs Habour is still lying half sunk and appears wrecked. It seems that the Authorities are content with allowing this to happen.... That boat looks like a good hiding place for cocaine or guns brought in late at nights...
